The offences are cognisable and non-bailable as pressure mounted on the Maharashtra Government to take action against the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader for his anti-North Indian diatribe that triggered street violence early last week.
Appearing to be even handed on the line of action, the police also slapped a case against Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi amid trading of charges between MNS and the SP on what led to trouble in the country's commercial capital.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad said arrests are mandatory in the type of cases registered against Thackeray and Azmi but gave no time-frame.
"There was enough evidence to register cases against Raj and Azmi...if the Investigating Officer feels that arrest is warranted then we will take necessary action," Prasad told reporters.
The case against Raj was registered at the suburban Vikhroli police station last night while the FIR was filed against Azmi at the Shivaji Park police station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII) D Karale said.
Raj was booked under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of place of birth, residence, etc) and 153 B (imputations, assertations prejudicial to national integration). Azmi was also booked under identical charges.
This is the second case against Raj in connection with the violence with Samajwadi leader Amar Singh having filed a FIR last Monday.
What has Raj Thackeray done for Mahrashtra or India?I want to know.Why are people even listening to him.He has only inflicted pain.He wants to protect Maharashtrians by causing riots?Constitution of India allows a person to migrate to any places of his or her choice.he cant throw us "non-maharashtrians" out of mumbai.We know our rights and we will fight for it and yes I am a proud mumbaikar.

There is no need for a central govt, as they are merely beggers thriving at the cost of state resources including men,machine,materials and money.Let the states govern themselves and only then the fittest will thrive.We don't need a puppet PM,President and ministers to govern the country.When people are mentally divided, what is the use of talking of secularism,unity,quotas ete.Let them keep it to themselves.
Pakistan will eat us up one by one. China will take the north, etc.......Very intelligent ideas maybe the best of British, Islamic, other forces like congress party who would have our nation divided.

True India is a democracy. Migration is good only if regulated. Right now it is total chaos in Bombay because it is not regulated. Freedom of speech is important and that is what Raj was doing. He speaks the truth and it is ground reality. Even in US hate groups like the KKK for eg make provocative statements aginst minorities. They are exercising their right to speak freely what they believe. Raj is not stooping to that level. He wants to stop the massive uncontrolled influx into Bombay. It is destroying Bombay. Bombay is Indias financial capital. And the central government uses it to finace improvements in other cities ignoring Bombay. I am a Bombayite and I have seen it becoming worse and worse. Raj is a straight shooter and we need him. We dont want gangsters and hooligans from other states disrupting Bombay and Maharashtra. All Maharashtrians will support both the branches of Shiv Sena on this because it is the truth and he spoke it. The central government and even the State government is full of Dhoti clad non-decisive leaders. Raj is energetic and speaks straight. thats what we need. Go Raj! I am proud of you.
I wonder what defense raj has and what are the root causes. Constitution of india allows a person to migrate to any places of his or her choice. So according to laws of india anybody can live where ever they want to live. How can Raj tackeray prevents anybody from moving or celebrating whatever they wish. It seems he has not respect of laws in india. Anybody please care to explain any laws which thackeray is using from indian constitution. Does he respect indian constitution or he just know his laws. I would be interested to hear from his supporter, please come up with some laws as evidence, if they follow one. If india is a free country then everybody is free to celebrate whatever they wish to. Unless marathi supporter of raj makes their own laws.

Not all the marathis are from mumbai.. probably even you are also not.Mumbai was not created by marathis but by businessmen gujarathis..so lets start wih you first
First of all Mumbai is rich because of the Business men from Gujrat and North India. Grow up. See, how southern states like Banglore, Hyderabad and Chennai accept people and are prospering. Dont think in small terms.
If every one behaves like Raj and his likes, then what is the point in India being a ONE country. It is as good as each state being different countries. Raj should be jailed to protect civilised people make a living. What if every leader in different states take the same stance against outsiders? Udhav says he will pack migrant workers in cargo plane. He thinks he is a hitler!
Raj is much better than many other politicians who divide Indian people among caste and religion line. Raj is saying very justified thing. India is not a homogenous society. Large-scale immigration within India is bound to have affect on local people. There are many examples of anger and violence against such internal migration. People must show respect towards local culture and language of they likes to settle in other states. Many bainya communities are doing havoc in many parts of India, in NE, Andaman etc. They are destroying local culture, environment and trust of local people. They are also importing huge labor from places like Bihar and UP for cheaper exploitation. Such large-scale influx of “outsiders” should be regulated and local culture must be preserved.
All politicians are criminals. Some are worst as we have in the central upa govt. Some are less criminals to a lesser extent. There are no 'better' politicians among criminal politicians in India.
Justice to Indian democracy can be achieved only if people like Raj Thackeray are punished by life imprisonment or hanging!! If few unresponsible politicians like him who create unnecessery trouble in our country for their cheap benifit are hanged then only the other politicians will come to their sense and will be afraid to create problems in the future.
This problem should be settled once for all.india is for every citizen. it is shame people talk that language for politics. they don't realize the future. and forgotton past history, of selevey. wake up indians.

The way Raj was discriminating a particular community and encouraging people to create riots, even 10 years of prison seems to low for such people. What kind of Maharashtrism he is talking about, he doesn’t even deserve to called as as human!
It’ a right action being taken by police officials in order to maintain law and order and let others to believe in justice.

What is root cause?.Do you have any law, which prevent a person from migratiing from one state to another. At least it is not in my knowledge. Does anybody knows that indian constitution prevent anybody from moving. If it not. Then what defense raj thackeray has?. Please reply in terms of laws of india. One important thing laws are according to constitution of india not what few individual thinks so please reply accordingly.
I am a Graduate from Ramnarain Ruia College,Matunga, Bombay University,in 1966 and I lived in Bombay from 1962 to 1970.Earlier to that I was born and brought up in Madras State. Since 1970 I am living in KGF/Bangalore. I have seen the starting of Shiv Sena in Bombay.The Maharashtrians are very excellent people and rich in the culture.They deserve to raise their voice against oppression in their own State.Raj Thackrey's father,uncle and his grandfather have made valuable contributions for the Maharashtrians.

A welcome step. Only only hopes that the FIR does not remain just a FIR, but it is taken to its logical conclusion, as the Maharashtra Government and the Police in the past have conveniently failed to proceed further in similar cases involving the politicians.
