Raj softens stand on 'Chhat' puja

Raj thackeray

Mumbai, October 31: Under attack for his campaign against north Indians, MNS chief Raj Thackeray on Friday softened his stand on 'Chhat' puja, saying that he was not opposed to the festival being celebrated in Maharashtra but warned against it being used as a show of political strength.

"I have never opposed Chhat Puja but only spoke against political 'tamasha' (stunt) associated with it....People from Bihar who live here can perform the religious rituals according to the customs. My party has never opposed it," he told reporters in Mumbai.

The MNS chief, whose detention under National Security Act has been demanded by some union ministers in the wake of attacks on north Indians in Maharashtra, warned that he would not tolerate disregard of the Marathi speaking people in the state.

The Chhat festival will be celebrated on November 4.

Thackeray also asked his supporters to exercise restraint and accused the media of distorting his views and spreading falsehood.

Justifying the killing of a youth who had hijacked a bus in Mumbai, he said the police action was "proper" as no one knew from which state the youth came from.

"What if he had shot some commuters, then you people would have taken the police to task," he said.

Thackeray also downplayed the killing of a youth in a suburban train during a brawl with a group of youngsters.

"Even the Railway police are saying that there has been no involvement of any political party," he said.

Besides, he recalled that in an incident sometime back, four Marathi youths where thrown out on tracks by a group of people from other states. "But no one said a word about the incident," he said.

Thackeray criticised the Maharashtra government and Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for withdrawing his security and termed the move as "political vendetta".

"I had not asked for security in the first place. But, now it has been withdrawn which is clearly political vendetta. The government keeps changing and even I will have a chance," he said.

"There is a state level committee which decides on security according to threat perception and not on the number of cases against the person. After the Babri mosque demolition in 1992, security of political leaders against whom cases had been registered was also increased," he said.

Thackeray also ridiculed demands to book him under the NSA.

"When Lalu (Prasad) was the Chief Minister of Bihar, there were 1200 murders. But, there was no demand to book him under NSA. When Biharis were killed in Assam, there was no uproar," he said.

"A Goan minister opposed starting of Goa-Bihar railway by saying that the state did not want more beggars.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit also spoke against people of Bihar and UP. But, only when Raj Thackeray speaks, there is a nationwide uproar and Prime Minister has to intervene."

Lashing out at Deshmukh, Thackeray said he had no expectations from him. "What can you expect from people whose political survival is at the mercy of Delhi," he asked.

The MNS chief also said that he would not allow anybody to harm "Marathi identity".

"Political rivals who do not see eye-to-eye on several issues come together. But, it is also very unfortunate that 48 MPs from Maharashtra are mute spectators," he said referring to the delegation of Bihar politicians meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Vote Politics by Mr Raj Thakrey by Rajesh on 01 Nov 2008

Congress might be supporting MNS to ensure division of Marathi votes between Shiv Sena

Demonising Raj by Rakesh on 01 Nov 2008

At the outset let me say that all Indians are chauvinistic. Are the commentators sure that Tamils, Mallos, kannadigas, Bengalis, ... and others are less chauvinistic. The Problem with Maharashtrains is that they are not politically savvy. TN has imposed language apartheid, Kerala/Bengal has imposed RED apartheid, Go to goa and you will find locals saying Ha bahercho... I am for free movement for people moving all over the country. However it should not be at the cost of people paying tax. Lets take the case of Bhaiyas, for them Bombay is like wild west where they can come, build slums, steal water, electricity, hawk on footpaths, add water to milk, pinch flour, give 400gms of veg. instead of 500gms, shit on railway tracks (wish lalu, amar, amitabh, azmi gave them company). There should be a white paper on employment in railways, MTNL.. How come only Bhaiyas are qualified for these jobs.Raj should be more sophisticated like tamils. Killing is not justified under any circumstances.

Where is our INDIA by Santosh on 01 Nov 2008

First of all , why are there so many states in India ,why are we always interested in division and not in unification ,why dont we follow something like germany, instead of division why dont all our 26 states(i forgot the number) unite and just form 1 state and 1 country.and instead of wasting people money in many state elections we just have only 1 state and 1 country election ,why dont we have 1 common education system so that all the people in india will follow 1 mindset ,why people are not taught to love their own country, why are we misusing our democracy (which is the most precious which we indians enjoy) than any other country in the world. Why dont our policitians use their politics in development/education of nation instead of using pseudo politics amongst each other

Mumbai and Bihar by Dr. Ratna Magotra on 01 Nov 2008

Long before MNS was born and Raj Thackray came on the scene, there have been stories going around of complete lawlessness in Bihar; kidnappings and murders happening with political connivance at the highest level. Train journeys were considered unsafe through Bihar with authorized passengers being thrown out of running trains and if my memory doesn't fail me, this had involved even our army jawans being mistreated by the hoodlums. Laloo Prasad lorded over this state of mayhem and we were happy that Nitish Kumar had started to put some order back in the system. While no sane person would condone the violence against north indians in Mumbai, or the manner Raj Thackray has taken upon himself to redress some very genuine problems caused by unchecked migration to Mumbai, response of Lalu, Paswan and Nitish Kumar sounds hypocritical and misplaced.

Mumbai threatened? by Priyanka on 01 Nov 2008

If anyone can make a statement like Maharashtra for the Marathis and Bihar for Biharis bla bla, they don't deserve to contest elections, to pose as responsible and concerned citizens and act victims. Will any one be able to stop the mass migration of people from maharashtra if tomorrow as a result of irresponsible behaviour, industries move out and Mumbai loses its status as a financial hub? NO. If basic law and order cannot be maintained and state elected representatives who I do believe are largely 'marathis' cannot perform their duties then not only Biharis but any one can jeopardise Mumbai's identityand security. And the whole discourse seems stupid when every one knows that inter regional, national migration cannot be reversed.Pls talk about peaceful coexistence and law and order. Even Raj Thackeray will not bother about migration threat if he has to apply to US for political asylum.

People stop fighting by rejy on 31 Oct 2008

Hello all--just looking at the all the comments says a lot about us --we all calling each other idiots and other names - after insulting each other the next would be fighting with each other and after the fighting comes the killing --thank God we can't be killed more than once -- relax and we will all meet in heaven or hell :-)

Democracy by An India on 31 Oct 2008

why is it that we Indians form opinions on what somebody else? How many of us know what Raj really said? I have watched both his speeches live on TV (just out of curiosity due to the cry in the media) and trust me he has not said anything as bad as what is being reported in the media. Its up to you my fellow Indians, whether you want to go with hearsay (media reports) or form your own informed jdgement.

Just think about what he said and what you are saying by Indian on 31 Oct 2008

I don't see any softening of any stand. He has always said the same thing. Follow any rituals, tradition, but do not show your political power in Maharashtra. People are randomly talking against Raj without even thinking about the things he has been saying. Arrest him! Hang him! Kill him!. And this is just because he demanding a fair deal for Maharashtrians in Railway, which has been a private property of Lalu and company. What will all these people will do if Raj uses similar language like Hang Them, Kill Them, etc.

Curse by vs on 31 Oct 2008

I was just reading suffering of Dharmadev's family who was killed by MNS in Mumbai train. Poor lady has a young kid and also pregnant . Can't control my emotions ..God pls punish the responsible people ..if u are really there . Don't trust any PM,CM or any politicians .

what is the end of this all? by common indian on 31 Oct 2008

Here people are people justifying the violance. it was quite surprising. i dont think any body , including Raj, have underrstanding, what is the atrhetted end results. Mumbai will have all sort of people, because mumbai is the more cosmopolitan then any city of India. Marathis cannot have all jobs, what mumbai offers and thirdly, mumbai cannot remain mumbai in its charecter, if it canot have amalgamation and vaiety of enterprise skill of such large chunk of people. Mumabi , since beginning had been cauldron of enterprising spirit of variety of people.the violance, in hand cannot lead to anything but political uprising of few people by negative publicity. The comarison between Lau and Raj is also quite interesting. Lau Rose the same way Raj is doing. neither lau had been good to his state nor Raj can ever be.Democracy is to accomodate aspiration of all, that include, marathi manoos, but in democracy, dialogue is the only aceptable process. Violance means aspiration are undemocratic

A coin ha two sides. by prasad on 31 Oct 2008

the issue of disregard of the localites is not only connected with maharashtra but the same situation arises everywhere with more or less the same consequences. the problem in dealing with it in this state is the unwillingness of the ruling party to help the sons of the soil to come up. since mumbai is a hub of activities in many ways, it is imperative that youth from other states will be attracted here for their progress. they have every right to do so and no one denied that fact. but the marathi manoos is disregarded many a times by the government only to please the emigrants. the chief minister says that Raj Thakarey has not said anything new and the law is already there in use for a long time. if that is the case, then what about its implementation? if raj has raised the issue, it is because the laws are not being implemented. having a law or a rule is not enough, acting accordingly is also imp.a coin has two sides. raj's metods may be extreme, bt the real subject is beingignored

Bihar and UP must not assume moral responsibility to “enrich” Mumbai or MH or any other parts of India by Jay on 31 Oct 2008

Why should we allow destruction of our rich national heritage of so many cultures and diversity (and economy) by encouraging lack of governance and total anarchy in some states like Bihar and UP? People are flocking to Mumbai or MH not for charity to Marathi people or to enrich Mumbai culture or local economy, but for their own good. Even if I am poor, it does not give right to others to come to my home to make me rich! Mumbai and MH have every right to allow some people but not each and everyone to their land to protect their own culture and economy. It will be prudent to ask central govt to have uniform national policy to control intra-state migration and protect our rich cultural diversity. It’ll be foolish to destroy the few remaining islands of prosperity and cultural diversity due to uncontrolled migration of semi-skilled and unskilled people to those areas and sky-high greed of businessmen-industrialists to exploit cheap labor force from impoverished areas.

Raj is a hero of Maharashtra by Sandeep on 31 Oct 2008

Raj is not soften on "Chhat Puja".His stand is clear from day 1.that do not involve politics in festivals. It was you media and reports who misguide the nation and marathi manus.

Raj is a HERO by Atul on 31 Oct 2008

has anybody have guts to come forward and speak anything negative of Raj Thackrey in public in Maharashtra .

RAJ IS A MONSTER by Saurabh on 01 Nov 2008

HE is not a hero of course, any thing done for the political motives, threatening lives of thousands of people in Maharashtra would not be considered as a heroic task.

Raj is a not a leader. He is an opportunist. by TT on 01 Nov 2008

Can Raj go and talk the same language about North Indians in North India? You can shout inside your home but Raj can do the same thing in Bihar and UP, then I will consider him a true leader.

Atul by Indian on 31 Oct 2008

And u think that makes him Hero ..if that is the case then Dawood Ibrahim is also a Hero ..because nobody has guts to say anything against him in his areas in Mumbai ..and why hime only..all nobody has guts to say anything against gangsters in their area ..Remember what Arun Gavali was doing to Shiv Sena ..many of their so called Heros were not comming out because they were warned by Arun Gavali gang . So Arun Gavali is a hero acording to ur definition of Hero ..What an IDIOT u are !

Raj is HERO by madan on 31 Oct 2008

I wonder if Raj has ever spoken anything outside Maharashtra?

Raj a Hero? by aseem on 31 Oct 2008

yes, no one has the guts. Everyone is afraid of a madman, especially when he is powerful. Did anyone speak anything against Hitler when he was powerful ? Think !

If Laloo or Paswan are heros, then Raj is a saint by Gujipak on 31 Oct 2008

Does anyone have guts to say anything against ANY political leader of Bihar-UP in those states? Leave alone Laoo or other such prominent leaders, even a local village mukhiya will not hesitate to kill any person opposing him, in Bihar and UP. Compare corruption charges against ministers and politicians from Bihar and UP and that against Raj.

Bombay should be declared as Union Terroritory as it will end Goonda Raj of MNS and Shiv Sena by Mona Sharma on 31 Oct 2008

Our government have failed to protects innocent hindi speaking citizens in lust of their votes.Yesterday MNS party men lynched a hindi journalist of "Nirbhay Patheek". Police were mere mute spectators on atrocities on our Hindi speaking people. Police and courts are taking sides of Marathis in feeling of son of soil syndrome.Bombay should be declared as Union Terroritory as it will end Goonda Raj of MNS and Shiv Sena.

Mumbai will be part of Maharashtra by Samir on 02 Nov 2008

If Mumbai is made a Union Territory then there will be flow of rivers with blood in Mumbai especially that of bhaiyyas

Day Dreaming!! by Navin on 01 Nov 2008

Mona and her tribe can continue day dreaming.Even Nehru failed to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra. The present day leadership is nothing in front of him.Incidentally the law and order in the of Delhi is among the worst in India with no security of life and property and no respect for women.Mona should have a gooood experience of Delhi.

Is that the only solution? by Marathi manoos on 31 Oct 2008

All of the past two weeks in posts by 'Mona Sharma'there is only one refrain,"Bombay should be declared a Union Territory!"You really think that will solve the problem of Raj Thackeray? If there are rabble rousers in other towns and cities, what a wonderful solution...declare that town as a Union Territory!?What is required is strict i mplementation of law and order and the Congress Govt in Mumbai is responsible for that. Please note, even though we Marathis agree with Raj Thackeray's grouse we do not approve of his methods,we too would like to see the rule of law prevail at all times. This is something more than what can be said of even Delhi the national capital.I know,I stayed there for 8 years!Ask any Delhi woman!

Separate Mumbai by Mard Maratha on 01 Nov 2008

separate Bombay/Mumbai from Maharashtra and make it a union territory, only then there will be peace , just because it is physically attached to mahrashtra doesnt mean it is a part of maharashtra, just because delhi is physically continous to UP dosent mean delhi is part of UP or Haryana. What if UP people decide that delhi is part of UP and start kicking out Marathis ?

Just Imagine !!! by Rajesh on 31 Oct 2008

Imagine, if all these jokers (sic. politicians), some folks lookup to as leaders, just disappear from the face of the planet and further imagine, if somehow our general population develop responsible attitude and intelligence to not make every scumbag a leader, what would happen to our country? Will it be as interesting and funny a circus it is now?

Lalu an idiot by Usha Singh on 31 Oct 2008

Lalu Prasad should be thrown out of the parliament with all his criminal record he is still in the ministry, that is very strange.

Is he still out? by TV Puram on 31 Oct 2008

We the public should not be bothered whether this Raj whoever has acold or athiritis. Tell us why he isn't in jail. Is BMC running short of dog catchers?

Dog by bharatiya on 31 Oct 2008

OK, so you are a dog captured by BMC, thus barking.

Did he have a choice by Satish Haldankar on 31 Oct 2008

He did this on the advice of his godfathers - the Congress-NCP in Maharashtra, what with pressure from the Central Government and the Prime Minister building up for stringent action. Otherwise he would be charged under NSA and would be behind bars for a long time. Do not for a moment forget that he has given up his hate agenda. This is only window dressing.

Raj Thackeray Softens stand by R Fernandes on 31 Oct 2008

The only way to stop Raj Thackeray from playing mischief is to withdraw his securitycompletely. We the people need security from Raj Thackeray and not him.Why is the state spending so much on his security when he terrorizes people.Stop his security and he will stop all mischiefRay Fernendes

Raj by Y on 31 Oct 2008

abey yedey, Raj has not softened the stand. It is the media who thinks that way. He is saying exactly the same thing he was a year back.

Bihari by Indian on 31 Oct 2008

What about withdrawing security of Lalu, Paswan, Amar Singh, Azmi who are the hardcore criminals.

Raj Thackeray should not be allowed outside of Jail by Geeta Baali on 31 Oct 2008

Some readers are unnecessary blaming here Lalu and Paswan out of context and unfortunately supporting killing of innocent north Indians by Raj Thackeray's men. I would like to ask them if Lalu is bad does it mean that Marathis got license to kill poor North Indians. Marathis have captured 90% jobs forcefully in Bombay and as a result poor North Indians are selling vegetables and pulling auto rickshaw. Someone like Bhagat Singh should come ahead and eliminate Raj Thackeray and his supporters.

Maharashtrians by venkat on 01 Nov 2008

Who told u that marathis are killing north indians, you dumb head. One person died in a train accident - it is proved by snaps from the CCTV. Other person was killed by some criminals in a train over a dispute about a window seat. These criminals have been arrested and being charged. Now tell me who and where north indians are being killed. Yes, there were beating of north-indian candidates of Railway Recruitment Board Exam. This is because candidates of Maharashtra are ignored. Sometimes back Mr. Lalu told in a railway function that "Maharashtrians should get education and then they will get job opportunities". Raj Thackeray was reacting to these type of statements from leaders like Lalu, Amarsingh, Mulayam Singh, Abu Azmi etc. Did U understand? Don't tell that north indians are being killed by Maharashtrians. North indians are living comfortably and peacefully in Maharashtra. If they were in UP or Bihar they would have starved to death. That is the reason they prefer to live in Maharashtra rather than die with hunger? You got it?

lady bhagat singh by arun on 31 Oct 2008

madam geeta,if your bhagatsingh kills raj then rajs bhagat singh will kill you and your lalu paswan and vice versa. this killings will go on as per your criminal fantasies.stpo uttering nonsense threats from hiding and spoiling peoples minds with your dirty hatred.if you have any guts you can yourself choose to become a lady bhagatsingh instead of instigating others and become a martyr.all the best to you.

Police must gun down Raj Thackeray now by Mrs Bhanumati on 31 Oct 2008

As government has failed to protect north Indian and law and order has been hijacked by Marathis. Some nationalist should come forward and gun down Raj and Udhav Thackeray. Police is siding with Marathi criminals and anti-nationals. Bombay should be separated from Maharashtra.

stupid comment, by prasad on 31 Oct 2008

whoever has posted this message is an ignoramus. mumbai is an integral part of maharashtra. and raj is fighting for his own cause. can bihar and up not come up with enough jobs to give to any youths in the state? is there going to be no development there?

Militray must gun down Lalu, Paswan, etc by Indian on 31 Oct 2008

Military and police should gun down Lalu, Paswan, Amar Singh, Abu Azmi. If police and military can't do it then some ordinary people should come forward to kill those criminals.

Military must gun down anti-nationals by venkat on 01 Nov 2008

It is the duty of our Military to shoot the anti-nationals. By supporting the terrorists who have undertaken the serial blasts in various parts of the country Mr. Lalu, Mr. Mulayam Singh, Paswan, Amar Singh, Abu Azmi, Mr. Bukhari, Brinda Karat, A. Bardhan, Mr. Yechury all have proved that they support the terrorists since they belong to some minority communities. These people should be handed over to the Military and probe their links to these terrorists.
