Raj-Azmi rivalry goes a long way

Posted: Nov 10, 2009 at 1145 hrs IST

Mumbai It is not the first time that Raj Thackeray and Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, who was assaulted by MNS members in the Maharashtra Assembly, have crossed swords.

The rivalry between the two leaders began last year, when Raj launched an anti-north Indian campaign, demanding rights for sons-of-the-soil.

The campaign took a violent turn when MNS men thrashed north-Indians, forcing several of them to leave the state.

Raj even opposed celebrating Chhat pooja and north India day in Maharashtra and said "only Maharashtra Day must be celebrated in Maharashtra".

Acting as a defender of north Indians, Azmi got into a war of words with Raj and said he would distribute batons to the people to protect them from MNS men.

Raj retaliated, saying he would distribute swords to Marathi people to take on the batons.

Both the leaders were arrested last year in February under various sections of IPC like provocation with intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between groups on the basis of places of birth, residence among others.

Before the Assembly session began yesterday, a political debate was started as Azmi demanded the House agenda in Hindi.

"Hindi is our national language and it should come after Marathi. However, the House agenda and other papers were in Marathi and English. So, I wrote to the Assembly secretary demanding the agenda in Hindi," Azmi, who was elected from Mankhurd in central Mumbai and Bhiwandi in Thane district had said.

Furious over Azmi's demand, Raj, known for his anti-north Indian campaign, said "If Azmi wants the House agenda in Hindi, then he should go to Uttar Pradesh."

Thirteen candidates of MNS have been elected to the Assembly while 11 of the Republican Left Democratic Front (RLDF), which also includes SP, were elected in the state Assembly polls.

Four MNS candidates were suspended for assaulting Azmi on the first day of the session, after he began taking oath in Hindi.

In February last year, Raj Thackeray and Azmi were arrested and released on bail hours after their arrest by Mumbai Police on charges of promoting enmity between groups and inciting violence.

Raj and Azmi were booked under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of place of birth, residence, etc.) and 153 B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration).

Stop Hindi Chavinism by Kumardeep on 11 Nov 2009

Stop giving undue importance to Hindi at cost of other languages. Banks, ATMs, income tax dept, CBSE/ICSE schools are known for Hindi imposition policy. Last month Tamil was banned from Parliament. You cant have double standards. Only English is a neutral language in India as it not anyone's 'mother tougue'. Presently Hindian have less syllabus in schools and dont have to learn any language. This racist policy favouring Hindi alone must go.

Bharatwasi by JC Mulla on 10 Nov 2009

As a Bharatwasi, we are proud of what MNS did to the third grade depleted useless malechchas Anyone with a faith alien to this great land of ours is a traitor of this nation. The faith alien to this nation are Muslim, Christian, Communism, SECULARISM. Raj Thackrey is against the third grade north Indians who have already destroyed our mother land by harboring so many mallechchas that the whole UP, Bihar, Bengal stinks with cesspools of dirt and garbage. They are doing the same thing to other parts of country. Bengalis, Biharis and UP wallas are drain on national resources of this country. All they have done is make their own lands barren by giving fillip to mallechchas. Biharis and UP wallas should be kicked back to their places. They need to clean their houses first before going out and making houses of other Bharatwasis like Maratthas, Punjabis, Gujaratis, Rajasthanis, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Central India, Kerala a place of Mallechchas.

Make Bombay Union Territory by Mona Sharma on 10 Nov 2009

Marathis should leave Bombay and develope other place. It is high time Bombay should be separated from Maharashtra and made an Union Territory. 60 crores hindi speaking Hindus should get united and deal Marathis with iron hands.

Mumbai by Raj Patil on 18 Nov 2009

Mona, ur words stink just like a typical UP/Bimari types. It shows ur shitty mentality. thats the reason why u guys are being shunned in every possible part of India. Its better u guys become human beings, its better for Maha'rashtra'.

Hindi and Hindu? by Sudheer on 11 Nov 2009

Please don't mix the words Hindi and Hindu. Hindi is not the language of Hindus alone.

Educated fools support this kind of decisive politicians: Raj and Sena's : the comedians of the century !!!

Politicians by Dilip on 10 Nov 2009

We are all missing onething: which is politicians are creating this one to settle personal scores and to keep off the public with other issues: which is shetler, law and order problem We created them so no complaints. unless we change our attitude, this will continue for ever. So please wake up, but we refused to.. No one has got any right to say what to do or what not to do. This is a democratic country, hope so.

disgusted with MNS by poo on 10 Nov 2009

It is highly disappointing to see such stupid petty matters becoming a source for violence. I am a maharashtrian and I love to speak marathi, but I am also an Indian who stays in a "democratic" country(supposedly). We got our freedom 62 yrs back so that we could speak what we want, wear what we want and do what we want (as long as we are not violating any laws) I do not want any party ti impose rules on my day to day activities, its none of their business as long as i m not disrupting the peace and harmony of the nation. Shame on MNS for coming up with stupid , low standard, self-created rules. I do not know if living in maharashtra is a safe option thanks to MNS.

NEED ELECTORAL REFORMS TO BAR CRIMINALS TO HOLD PUBLIC OFFICEPO by S K Patil on 10 Nov 2009

A rigid electoral law must be enacted to bar politicians from holding any public office, in any capacity, if they are, directly or indirectly engaged in sowing the various seeds of communal hatred to ignite, communal riots & violence disorder to create anarchy in the country.

some more intresting facts by mani on 10 Nov 2009

hey why you marathi's every time is to come up on bihari's and UP issue its not only marathi manoos who developed mumbai.it was the capital of whole nation which was put in for development of mumbai. ****check this out the biggest chunck of "FOREIGN INVESTMENT" comes from country called "MAURITUS" which is inhabited by people from BIHAR and UP.so someway down the lane so many of marathi manoos is being feed by the investment done by NRI's from BIHAR and UP. **** Even if u looked for the history BIHARI ruled over you for so many years(remember MAGADH empire). Just don't under estimate them because of thier current situation as that is mostly due to political negligence. "JAI HIND"

For your information MANI by Raj Thackrey on 10 Nov 2009

The maharashtrians never asked for beeharies investment or investment from other states. People come and invest here in mumbai because of its culture and infrastructure which is in tatters in states like beehar and UP. About your MAGADH empire analogy, it was the first and also the last prosporous empire in history. Shivaji raje was a lone fighter against rulers, now as well maharashtrians stand tall and are ready to take on any state of india.

some intresting facts for you. by mani on 10 Nov 2009

i had just gone through the script used in marathi. hey all you raj thackrey supporters its purely been devised using devanagri script (used for writing hindi). so when are you all coming with your own script. the language which don't have its own script, you all goons are fighting for that. beside that some more intresting facts,Marathi is actually a language combining the old Dravidian vernacular of the region which would have been close to Kannada and Telugu and the actual Maharashtri Prakrit and Sanskrit. The more recent influence of Persian, Arabic or Urdu has also made this language seem close to mainstream Hindi. so fools this is just a mixture language which u had lent from other language.

U Fool by Girish Desai on 10 Nov 2009

Hi Fool, If u dont have enough knowledge regarding any language or te culture of the region please kep your mouth shut. Also who gave you the right to call any one fool. If you think you are that intellectual I am ready to have an open discussion with you on this. For your kind information I know marathi, kannada, Telgu, Tullu. If you know any of these languages you wold have never said this and tell me how marathi is a mixture of other languages.

The Root Cause by Babu Veeraraghavan R on 10 Nov 2009

The root cause of this inter-state problem is underdevelopment. Some states in India have not developed economically at all and are still comparable to the conditions of some farican countries living in stone age. While states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and cities like Bangalore, Chennai are growing there is no development in Bihar and UP. These people want to enjoy the cake of other states without working. This is what will happen when some states develop and others don't leading to inequities and dependent behaviour of underdeveloped states on the relatively developed states.Biharis go for jobs in other states as there are no jobs in their states. WHILE BIHAR AND UP CANNOT GIVE EMPLOYMENT TO OTHER STATES THEY SHOULD NOT EXPECT EMPLOYMENT FROM OTHER STATES.JOBS MUST BE GIVE AND TAKE POLICY AND NOT ONE-WAY PATH.Some states work hard and others get undue benefit out of it.IF LALU AND MULAYAM ARE REALLY BOTHERED ABOUT THIS THEY SHOULD WORK FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR STATE AND NOT FOR THEMSEL

its high time by Raj Thackrey on 10 Nov 2009

It is a high time, if the rest of india does not change its attitute towards marathi or maharastrians, then be prepared for a back lash. Maharashtra is already a developed country if we do nto have liabilities like UP, Bihar and other states like rajastan. Mind well, we do not need you guys. Imposing hindi in the name of patriotism is just an eye wash, in maharashtra marathi should come first. If you do not like maharashtra or marathi's then please go back to your middle age states where you come from, you are not welcomed here.

Its high time. by Zahid Ahmed on 10 Nov 2009

Its time that Raj Thakre and anti national characters like him are tried for treason. This guy is sick. Please pray for him. How come such characters happen to be there in a great state of Maharashtra. Maharashtra has not been made by Thaery's forefathers. It has been built by everybody including Mughals and Parsis and now North Indians. Why can't a common hertage be shared. Why is it so that I will live only when he dies. Why can't both live happily.

I warn you Ahmed by Raj Thackrey on 10 Nov 2009

The maharashtrians never asked for help from other states to come and do development here. People from other states have come here and invested because of the culture and infrastructure that maharashtra provides. If you are so keen on development, please leave this state and do some development in UP or beehar. We cannot throw a piece of bread in your begging bowl for eternity without having to work for it.

Country? by Sat on 10 Nov 2009

Oh Raj-o, since when did Maharashtra became a "developed country"? Do you have your embassies in other "countries" of the Union of India? Kya baat hai yar? "It's high time" you come to sense.

Goonda Raj ! by MVM on 10 Nov 2009

The whole incident is being totally mixed up and getting confused in the comments on debate. The issue is not about Azmi or MNS and its MLAs. One and/or all of them might be goons. The issue is why and how such ugly response is being exhibited against Hindi-the National Language- insterad of the local Marathi Language. If I recall right, after the last General Elections to Lok Sabha and Government Formation, one of the DMK MP, while being sworn in as Minister, took oath not in English, not in Hindi but in Tamil. Was or did any one make hue and cry about it? According to constitution, one can take oath in any of the recognised languages and not to be forced otherwise by goons. It would now seem desirable, if not essential, to hold a refresher course conduct an entry test before contesting elections at state or national level to curb goon-tunes for public view. Or else people will stay away from voting.

Fight of Ego's by Ruturaj on 10 Nov 2009

People this is just a clash of two ego centric guys and we all act as medium for both of them. Its better if these political stunts on both ends are ignored by well educated and tolerant people like us..!

Well done MNS by Raj on 10 Nov 2009

Traitor Abu Azmi deserves what he got. The govt very well knows Abu Azmi's links with Dawood. Yet he is considered a respected person. He is a bloody criminal. He does not love either Marathi or Hindi. His love is only Pakistan. This is all big Natak. As regards action against MNS people, in the past we have seen mics, chappals and chairs being thrown. That time why no action was taken? Abu Azmi deserves more kicks and slaps.

All UP. Bihari-es, please tell to your hon. politicians to improve these two states as soon as possible rather then using bad languages against Maharashtra & Raj, and avoid the criticism in India. Let us (maharasthians) live at our own home, and save Maharashtra and as well save India!! Jai Hind Jai Maharashtra!!

Re: Mahesh by Avinash Baranwal on 10 Nov 2009

Yes, Mahesh. You are right Hindi speaking people should ask their leadership for their current situation. Right now, people should start asking Tatas to shift their headoffice from Mumbai to Jharkhand...Why should they settle at a place when they get their ores from Jharkhand? and similar demands should come from other states also. If Hindi Speaking people will have sense, they should politely buycot anything from Maharashtra...be it movie or any any good manufactured. Probably then hindi speaking people would be able to realise their worth and Marathi-blind supporters will know their worth.

hey Avinash Baranwal by Mahesh Male on 10 Nov 2009

This mean your mindset is not going to change. Please open your eyes. Only Tatas or some companies are not prospering Maharastra. It%u2019s our great marathi culture who is responsible for our own developments. Same thing is applicable for great cultures of states like Gujrat, Panjab, Hariyana, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Andra, Tamilnadu etc%u2026 etc. Please TRY to change your people%u2019s mindset & future from calling beggars of India in 2020.

Mr Male by Male??? on 10 Nov 2009

Mahesh can u name one big company owned by Marathi.. even TATA opened his 1st steel plant in Bihar....btw it is not only Mahrathis who created Mumbai, it is shared by all Indians who worked hard in building roads & buildings.... you know 90% of Raw Materials are orginated from Jharkhand & Chattisgarh....we stop that all the great companies (incidently none ownned by Marathi) will STOP FUNCTIONING

Don't hurt sentiments of all people...focus on development projects. by Rodrigues D on 10 Nov 2009

I love Mumbai. This is what Mumbai needs: A metro rail from Asangaon to CST so that commuters dont have problems travelling.. A super highway connecting CST to Asangaon so that people dont have problems travelling.. Reduced load shedding(power cuts) timings so that people can live peacefully.. Increased coastal and aerial security for the entire place.. We live here peacefully with our brothers and sisters belonging to all religions and creed... No true Indian is alienating Mumbai. No true Indian is playing with emotions. No true Indian is disrespecting Vande Mataram. We all together celebrate diwali, christmas,id festival and all other festivals peacefully with our neighbours....what more peace do we need? Politicians must now focus on constructive development projects for Mumbai....This is their job as they love Mumbai!!??God Bless.

HINDU HOOLIGANS VS MUSLIM HOOLIGANS by S K Patil on 10 Nov 2009

Azmi is using the hooliganism of Navnirman Sena to further his own sinister motives to ignite communal violence & to eliminate India's nationhood. The leadership of Muslim organisations are, like Navnirman Sena, are selfish & fame seekers. Azmi is using all the opportunities to break India into pieces for balkanisation of India. Muslim clerics, Deobandis, other prominent Muslim institutions & political organisations are fishing in trouble waters to achieve their ulterior motive i.e. to break-up India.

Hindi people should take Tolerance 101 by Live and let live on 10 Nov 2009

The Hindi people should learn some minimal tolerance. Bad enough that in the Hindi states, they don't leave room for other Indian languages to flourish; they have been bulldozing their language and forcing it down the throat of other states. Ballabh Pant - shame on you, and shame on Azmi!Marathi is the national language of Maharashtra, which is clearly the most tolerant Indian state. Where else would you find such linguistic diversity in its richest and capital city?

... by Chirag on 10 Nov 2009

"Marathi is the national language of Maharashtra" just to clarify, nation is India and "its" language is "Hindi". No offense.

Replay Live and let live by anshu on 11 Nov 2009

This type of thing happened only in mumbai, outside of mountain (mumbai) there is %u201CIndia%u201D please go over there. And other thing Utter Pradesh is the highest teaching language state in India search on google please.

Raj Thackeray vs Abu Azmi by Varind on 10 Nov 2009

If the evil has been nipped in the bud, Maharashtra assembly would not have witnessed such an ugly scene. Neither Abu Azmi/Amar Singh nor Raj Thackeray are saints. Amar Singh at the outset last year's turmoil and Abu Azzmi at later stage put "Ghee" in the fire, the result is violence. People of Maharashtra along with other Indians there are suffering because of politics of Vote Bank and Congress/NCP combine is mute spectator and enjoying power due to monkey divide. A serious matter should be looked into seriously before the fire engulfs much wider area.

Save us. by Mahesh M on 10 Nov 2009

Is Gandhi responsible for this?? by kaka on 10 Nov 2009

Gandhiji "our great leader" was responsible for 1st division of India based on religion, then having states based on language. this language based division has not served any great benefit to poor people of India. India is and will remain growing economy but a poor nation. and our politician wants us to fight on issue of language, religion, caste. so that people don't get unite and worry about real issues like terrorism, inflation, unemployment, educcation, development, poverty and so on. Raj is nothing but a result of Gandhiji thought of dividing India based on languages we spoke.
