On February 6, Nangli, a BSP leader from Shadulpur and runner-up in the same constituency in the recently concluded assembly elections, was gunned down near a market in Rajgadh in Churu district. The killers, with faces covered, intercepted Nangli on motorcycles and shot him in the head at point black range. Unrest spread across the district soon after, and one person was even killed in police firing, when with BSP supporters, alleging their leader was the victim of political rivalry, tried to reportedly torch a police station.
According to the police the four arrested include, Balwant Singh, who planned and financed the operation, who hired two gunmen Shyam Sunder and Satpal to kill Nangli. The police believe that Singh wanted to avenge his brother Sumer Singh's death, for which he held Nangli responsible. Incidentally, sources in the police confirmed that Nangli was in fact an accused in the Sumer Singh murder case, but was acquitted due to lack of evidence.
