New Delhi Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee met Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari in his chamber during the 15-minute adjournment of the House half an hour before midnight Thursday. Mukherjee told Ansari that the government’s view was that the House could not sit beyond the three days for which the session had been extended.

The House could not decide on its own to function beyond midnight, thereby extending the session to December 30.

As advised by Mukherjee, Ansari adjourned the House sine die at midnight.

Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley was, however, of the view that the House had the power to decide how long it wanted to sit.

Lalu Ghosts im Rajya Sabha by rr on 31 Dec 2011

Lalu Prasa yadav once said that he had left the ghosts in his past CM residence before vacating as CM. Probably he must have used them here and told Ansari Sab about it to give enough time for them to play after Midight.

Lokpal Bill by H J Tavaria on 31 Dec 2011

It would help if all Political Parties and their elected Representatives admit that the Political 'Economy' is run by Black Money and none of them has any interest in having an Authority which can look into their Actions and mete out Punishment. Atleast Lalu Prasad Yadav was honest in stating that nobody in politics wants the Lokpal Bill and that the Bill deserved to be thrown away. India will need another 1991 type crisis to clean the Political Economy. This finger-pointing that all the political parties are doing, is just a smokescreen. At heart, the Lokpal Authority was never desired and hence the Position is not in place more than 60 years after Independence. Let us not give them too much of thought or listen to their whining. They are all 'birds of the same feather'.

Lokpal Bill in Rajya Sabha by SPSingh on 31 Dec 2011

Rajya Sabha can sit after 12 mid night or not-is there any doubt? To my knowledge it has no presidential sanction to go beyond specified time. It is as simple as that. Why BJP tries tp malign congress for every thing.....

Mr. by Damodara Bhat on 31 Dec 2011

If the Chairman adjourned the house based on the message of FM then why it was not clarified in the house? Why did the chairman choose politics while adjourning? Why did he took shelter under the disturbance in the house for justifying his actions? A plain answer to Seetharam Yechuri's question should have avoided all the blame games.

Rajyasabha fiasco by NILAMKUMAR BUCH on 31 Dec 2011

It was a planned gimmick of Congress to kill time by putting up objectionable Lokpal. Who can stop Rajyasabha to work beyond midnight for such a historic bill? Congress had enough time to discuss draft bill with major political parties before putting in Parliament.

A LAME EXECUSE by BIMAL CHANDRA JHA on 31 Dec 2011

Sir, Not only Justice Hegde who said that no political party sincerely wanted the enactment of Lokpal bill, but most of us believed that neither the government nor the opposition is honest on the passing of Lokpal bill. I agree with the media view that the script for chaos in Rajya Sabha was written under the direction of the government with Lalu Prasad giving a leading role. Nobody can justify the presence of Lalu Prasas in Rajya Sabha when he is not a member of this august house. Rajneeti Prasad, a RJD MP created scene at the instruction of his boss, Subhas Kasyap, a noted constitutional expert in his article published today rightly blamed the government for not passing the bill. Today, the government is giving assurance that it would been able to pass the bill in the budget session which will be held after the completion of assembly polls in 5 states. In fact, the government is eying at the performance of election results. Yours faithfully; BIMAL CHANDRA JHA Samanpura Road,PATNA

Ruling UPA in Minority. by CA. Rajay Kumar Aggarwal on 31 Dec 2011

So, the Congress party made every efforts whether directly or theough its allies to block the voting on LOKPAL in Rajya Sabha to please their masters. They do not enjoy the majority in Lower House as well as Upper House. But, still saying that they have majority. They have made mockery of DTAA signed with Swiss Government and now making mockery of parliamentary democracy.

WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY . by RAJAT KUMAR MOHINDRU .JALANDHAR CITY . on 31 Dec 2011

Where there is a will there is a way . As the Government extended the Parliament session for the passing of Lokpal Bill but if the Bill could not go through the Rajya Sabha it was better to extend the Rajya Sabha session for one more Day . As the Union Finance Minister Mr Parnab Mukheerjee had said that the Rajya Sabha could not sit beyond midnight . It would have been much better if the Rajya Sabha session would have been extended by one or two days in the interest of the public .

Rajya Sabha Speaker by Bhanu jain on 31 Dec 2011

Comments by the speaker of RS at the closing of the session that with this behaviour of the members he cannot continue the session. We think that this statement came too late. This he should have made quite early in the session but not the reason for the adjpurnment. He did not clarify the reason of the house adjournment in spite of request from opposition leaders for the continuity of the session. We can see that what will be the fate of lok pal if the selection of lokpal remains in the hand of govt. like that of speaker.
