Rama Setu not integral part of Hindu religion, Centre tells SC

New Delhi, October 14: Giving a new twist to the Sethusamudram project controversy, the government has contended before the Supreme Court that the mythological Rama Setu bridge is not an “essential” and “integral” part of Hindu religion.

“It has not been proved undoubtedly to be the belief of the Hindu community that Lord Rama did not himself break the bridge. Nor has it been established that whatever remains of the Rama Setu as a piece of worship is an essential and integral part of the Hindu religion,” the UPA government said in its written submission.

The government stand assumes importance as on the last hearing on July 30 it had assured the court that it was considering the possibility of pushing the project through an alternative alignment to avoid any damage to ‘Rama Setu’ for which an expert committee has been set up.

However, it persisted with the argument that Rama Setu or Adams Bridge was broken by Lord Rama while returning from Sri Lanka and as such “anything broken could not be worshipped”.

It said that the opponents of the project have not proved that Rama Setu forms an “integral” and “essential” part of Hindu religion and has to be protected.

“A religious belief or practise which is not an essential and integral part of the religion is not protected by Article 25 or 26 of the Constitution”, the Centre said and quoted various previous judgements of the apex court to drive home its point.

Double standards of Congress led UPA govt by Upendra Watwe on 15 Oct 2008

This goct must go and we should make sure that Congress I is removed from existence from all over India. The same party wholeheartedly flung the nation into turmoil over loss of a hair from the Hajratbal Darga in kashmir !!! all hindus, grow up reading about how Lord Rama built the setu to go to Lanka and defeat Ravan. How can Raam Setu be sidelined like this ? This is a shining example that shows how the united people always succeed even if they are individually weaker than the opponents. The UPA government is again affected by its allergy to the name "Ram".Hope the SC realises that playing with this issue is like asking people to prove id there exists "Bharatmata" !!! and simply throws the issue overboard and scraps the Setu Samudram project.

Shri Ram Setu by Rama Rao on 15 Oct 2008

Since when did this stupid UPA party became spokespeople for HINDUS? These are the people selling India to outsiders and shamelessly headed by an outsider. They should be thrashed to death in the elections so they wil run to their countries. Fellow Indians and Hindus, please take charge of the country and our traditions. Dive these religious bigits and foreigners aliens out of our MAHABHARATH!! Don't mess with Indians....SAVE INDIA FROM THIS MALICIOUS CAMPAIGNS!! ARE THE COURTS STILL ALIVE THERE??

Why does UPA government want to kill India? by Bharat on 15 Oct 2008

Why is UPA government hell bent to destroy India? The economy is in shambles. The society has been poisoned so much that it is at war with itself. The terrorists are killing innocent Indians. All in UPA government need to do soul searching if they should be part of it. The evil rule of UPA government must end as 'Aam Admi is dying unheard.

Ram Setu by Pran on 15 Oct 2008

Funny and foolish arguments by UPA Govt. If Ram Setu is not integral part of Hindu society as Hindus were not worshiping that Setu by going deep in to the sea. It is part of Hindu religion as built by Lord Rama and why to destroy that Setu which helped Lord Rama .More so the new king of Sri Lanka after Ravana,s defeat was a friend of Lord Rama. Karunanidhi is bent upon creating mischief even at the cost of people living near sea.

Hindu Sentiments ALWAYS ignored by ashok pai on 15 Oct 2008

the project just does not make any economic sense. it destroys the environment. it only manages to enrich DMK's dredging companies. and oh, by the way UPA/ congress cares two hoots about hindu sentiments. they have time and again, taken extreme care not to insult or hurt any christian or muslim sentiments. but more importantly, they have explored all angles of the project and said what they feel - THEY JUST DONT CARE ABOUT HINDU SENTIMENTS!

EMOTIONS ! by James Connor on 14 Oct 2008

A little understanding will make it obvious that RAM SETU is undeniably powerful emotional issue related to faith. I am sure is a minority was strongly sensitive about this issue then the brainy seculars would take serious offence.

secularism by shadab qayoom on 14 Oct 2008

this is something interesting why does the so called secular central government need to tell hindu's of this country whats integral part of hinduism and whats not..let the religious heads of hinduism decide and not the so called secular government

Rama Setu by VENU GOPAL on 14 Oct 2008

What a pity. When does this Country reveal the true identity of this Government which is run by Foreigners that get their instructions from Vatican. Everyday Hindus are being persecuted by bomb blasts in our Temples, Christians performing forced religious conversions. I am ashamed that this vast country doesn't seem to have just handful of patriots who can clean up the mess this Government is creating.
