Kolkata, June 18 Land in the city's fringes is being held at ransom by gangs of hooligans, who have self-styled themselves into real estate promoters.

In the latest gang fight on Wednesday morning, one Ayub Khan, 35, of Kaikhali was attacked and injured by another mafia lord Nazrul. Police officers said the attack was prompted by rivalry over the possession of land.

Officers said Khan was out in the area, when Nazrul crept up behind him on a motorcycle and opened fire. Khan was hit in the shoulder and he began to run. However, Nazrul speeded up behind him, caught hold of Khan and stabbed him repeatedly before making away. Khan is admitted in the nearby Apex nursing home, in a critical condition. Barasat's sub-divisional police officer Joy Biswas said both Khan and Nazrul have a healthy dossier in crime. He added a case of attempted murder has been registered against Nazrul.

In another incident – on April 23 – Tiljala-based promoter Ashok Roy was shot dead around midnight by a gang of extortionists, who had demanded protection money from him. The family said the men had asked for Rs 40,000, which the businessman did not pay. Roy was killed after three bullets hit him on the head.

Police officers said Roy's attackers were led by criminals of the area Sanjay Das and Dilip Das. Some members of Roy's family were present when the incident took place.

Officers said Roy had a criminal record too and had been arrested nine times before between 1997 and 2007 on charges of murder and dacoity.

Senior police officers said violence resorted to by the real estate mafia had come down. But they said the fringes, which are experiencing a construction boom and skyrocketing land rates have become the new battleground for criminals.
