Washington, February 18: UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has asked all sides to refrain from any actions or statement that could endanger peace and incite violence in Kosovo which declared its independence from Serbia.

"I call on all sides to reaffirm and act upon their commitments to refrain from any actions or statements that could endanger peace, incite violence or jeopardize security in Kosovo and the region," Ban said in a statement following an Emergency Meeting of the Security Council yesterday.

The meeting was called by Russia to declare "null and void" the self-proclaimed independence by Kosovo's ethnic Albanians. The 15-members council will formally meet on Friday to discuss the developments.

"Pending guidance from the Security Council, United Nnations Misson In Kosovo (UNMIK) will continue to consider Security Council resolution 1244 (1999) as the legal framework for its mandate and will continue to implement its mandate in the light of the evolving circumstances," he said.

Ban said that he has been informed by his special representative in Kosovo that the declaration of a resolution on the independence pledges continued adherence to resolution 1244 and also pledged continuing work with the UNMIK there.

The Secretary General also informed that he had received a letter from Serbian President informing him that his country has adopted a decision that declaration of independence by Kosovo represents a forceful and unilateral secession of a part of the territory of the Republic of Serbia and does not produce any legal effect either in the Republic of Serbia or in the international legal order.
