Though he was happy leprosy elimination was in good shape, he felt there was a long way to go in rehabilitating the cured. He expressed this concern in his last meeting with Dr Sharadchandra Gokhale, president of International Leprosy Union at a camp eight months ago.
Gokhale’s association with Amte goes way back to when the Central Government appointed the first committee for addressing the rehabilitation needs of the leprosy affected and cured. A five-member team appointed by the government included Amte and Gokhale. They toured the country and presented the first report in 1980 to be implemented by all states.
“Baba’s death has left a void among those fighting in the area of leprosy,” Gokhale said.
