Melbourne, January 9: The ICC has urged Cricket Australia to reign in Ricky Ponting's men in the light of all-round criticism of their on-field behaviour during the ill-tempered second Test against India.

ICC CEO Malcolm Speed said CA needs to take notice of the criticism being directed at its team by the public, former players and commentators.

"The team is being criticised, members of the team are being criticised and they need to to be aware of that -- they need to respond to that," Speed was quoted saying in the Herald Sun.

"All national teams should play cricket in the right spirit. We need to be clear what that means," he said.

Speed said he was relieved that the replacement of umpire Steve Bucknor prevented an international crisis.

"We could have gone in banging the table and playing `who blinks first', we could have turned what is already an international incident into an international crisis."

"What we have elected to do, and we have given some serious thought about this, is to take one of the issues out of play," he said.

Speed said the Sydney Test was played in an atmosphere riddled by racism claims, player behaviour issues and umpiring controversy, but expressed confidence that after Bucknor's replacement and roping in of Ranjan Madugalle to work with the two captains, the unprecedented crisis would tide over.

"There was unhappiness about the umpiring, we put a new umpiring team in place. And we start again from the umpiring perspective in Perth and, hopefully, focus on the matters on the pitch rather than exacerbating the crisis," he said.

Go to youtube and do a search on "Harbhajan Symonds MONKEY issue" and watch parts I and II.

Part II by DanVH on 10 Jan 2008

Quite often Indians tell us that "Monkey" is not a racist term but every Indian at the ground that night knew they were being racist. The scoreboard was displaying a sign saying that "Spectators shall not engage in any conduct, act towards or speak to any player, umpire, referee or other official or other spectators in a manner which offends, insults, humiliates, intimidates, threatens, disparges or vilifies that other person on the basis of that person's race religion, colour, national or ethnic origin" yet the racist Mumbai crowd continued to chant their racist vitriole. I was in India last November and I noticed that the only other sport on TV other than cricket was European football. And everyone on the entire planet who watches European football knows that calling a sportsman of African decent a monkey is racism of its worst kind. Added to this Herchelle Gibbs was suspended for two test for calling some Pakistani supporters a bunch of monkeys. Go to youtube and do a search on "Harbhajan

After Mumbai, Ponting had no choice. by DanVH on 10 Jan 2008

Yes Team India were the victims of a lot of very poor umpiring decisions but can someone please explain what Ponting has done wrong? What has he done that is unsportsmanlike? As a result of the "racist Indians of Mumbai" display last October both captain were told by the ICC that if there is any racial abuse it must be reported. When Harbhajan said whatever he said to Symonds, Symonds and two other players (Haydon and M.Clark) say they heard him use a racial slur. Although Tendulkar says he didn't hear anything it doesn't mean that nothing was said. Whether he said anything or not is purely speculation. However, when all three players told Ponting what they heard he had no alternative but to report it to the unpires. You can see him say to Harbhajan something like "sorry but I have to report it". And remember this all happened because of the racist behaviour of the Mumbai crowd. If you want to see this deplorable behaviour go to youtube and do a search on "Harbhajan

Incident should teach a lesson to all cricket teams by Greg on 10 Jan 2008

Cricket used to be a gentleman's game. This incident should teach a lesson to all teams, AUS in particular, to understand that GAME of CRICKET is bigger than any player/team/country. As many cricket legends had suggested, it is high time for Ponting to be sacked. Not only Ponting should resign but also Clarke (or whoever the future would-be AUS captain) to learn basic sportsmanship from now on. Team India should now start proving in the field.

WHY THEY LIKE BUKNOR? by Altaf Hussein. on 09 Jan 2008

HI GUYS, THEY LIKE THIS BUCKNOR, HE GIVES OUT EVERY TIME PONTING SHOUTS.

Fourth umpire by Raj on 09 Jan 2008

ICC should appoint Ricky Ponting as fourth umpire for the remaining 2 tests coz as per Ricky his integrity should not be questioned. All the decisions should be referred to him and he can overrule any umpire's decision. Even if he is not on field on field umpires should ask him for his decision whether out or not, and that should be final. Also, ICC should make a rule that when Australia bats, no batsman goes back to the pavilion unless he is out 4 times. When Australia bowls, if the ball falls within 2 meters of the fielder the batsman is out. Ricky Ponting should be asked to make the decision.

Poning is above ICC rules and laws by Mohammad A Khan on 09 Jan 2008

What Tricky Ponting is to umpires of Cricket in Australia, is what Sonia Gandhi is to Manmohan Singh and congress party. They can't do anything wrong and they can't abuse any one.

Aussies must learn to be respectful and descent towards India. by DILIP/FRANCE on 09 Jan 2008

The days of White Aussies lecturing to Indians are in the past. Sooner the cocky Aussies realise that it is the brown man, who now holds the Finacial clout and if they step out of line, will have their benefit cut off. So they should learn to behave themselves and be respectful towards the Indian.Indians are now ready to flex their muscles, whenever and wereever they perceive injustice is done to them. They must not mess about with India, an emergeing Super Power.
