Chandigarh, February 8 Amidst indications of a relief package by the Union government for debt-ridden farmers, both the ruling SAD-BJP combine and the Congress in Punjab are working overtime to ensure the “claim game” is not lost, if at all the announcement on the relief package comes through.

The Punjab Congress maintains its efforts for the farmers’ cause are poised to show results. State Congress chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal says the party had taken up the issue with its government at the Centre, which is favourably viewing its concerns for Punjab farmers.

The ruling SAD-BJP combine does not want to be left out either. Soon after MP Sukhbir Singh Badal’s elevation as the SAD president, the junior Badal announced a “maha rally” of the combine at New Delhi. The prime focus of the rally is to demand relief package for farmers. Top BJP leaders will join SAD leaders on February 26, the day on which the rally is scheduled to take place. Farmer suicides and farmer indebtedness have been two focal issues concerning the state.

Ironically, no political party has seriously attempted to address the problem of farmer suicides. Governments have instead been attempting to either counter or discount the number of suicide deaths that have taken place in the state.
