New Delhi Certain religious leaders on Thursday strongly disapproved of the Delhi High Court judgement which legalised gay sex among consenting adults. "This is absolutely wrong to legalise homosexuality. We will not accept any such law," Jama Masjid Imam Ahmed Bukhari said. He also critcised the government for trying to amend the Indian Penal Code to scrap section 377 that criminalizes homosexuality. "If the government makes such attempt to scrap the Section 377, we will oppose it strongly," Bukhari said.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli said homosexuality is not allowed by any religion. "It is against all religions. It is against the culture of Indian society. We feel there is no need to legalise homosexuality. This practice is unnatural. It should continue as a criminal act," he said. Father Dominic Immanuel said that churches have no objection to decriminalisation of homosexuality but it should not be legalised. "We have no objection to decriminalisation of homosexuality because we do not consider these people as criminals on par with other criminals," Immanuel said.

However, churches do not approve of homosexual relations as ethical and moral right of the people, he said. "It is against nature. Our position is that homosexuality should not be legalised," he said, adding such practice will increase paedophilia and HIV/AIDS. The court said Section 377 of the IPC as far as it criminalises gay sex among consenting adults is violation of fundamental rights.

THIS IS SIN. by George on 02 Jul 2009

THERE IS ENOUGH CRIME IN ALL OVER THE WORLD. WHY ADD THIS ONE TOO? KNOW YOUR BIBLE. HOW MANY REMEMBER GOD'S JUDGEMENT ON SODOM AND GOMMORHA? THE BIBLE SYS REPENT YOU ALL AND TURN AWAY FROM THE EVIL WAYS. THIS IS NOT NATURAL. SO DO NOT LEGALIZE IT.

Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve by Narendra Rawat on 02 Jul 2009

God did not sanction homo behaviour. If he did, he would not have created Adam and Eve, he would have created Adam and Steve.

Would you know of steve by Gaurav on 03 Jul 2009

Even if there were indeed an Adam and Steve, you would now know about it, as only Adam and Eve could have descendants. Those who feel that this is unnatural, just use google and you will find that such behaviour and tendencies are universal and can be found in all species and well documented in various species like dogs, cats and birds as well. Or are all these acts sinful!

Gay-Sex/Homosexuality---- by romesh.sharma on 02 Jul 2009

To my mind the constitution of India itself needs lot reforms/amendments,infact must be revised as per existing times bestowing true secularism keeping religous laws out.The only mention of equality forall, respect and tolerence for all and by all. Some readers are criticizing muslims and talking bull-shit about democracy which is foolish and wrong. One has to go for sensible reasoning considering not only the forces of the opposing argument but also the bias to which own mind is subject. Its duty of law-makers to cultivate better habits, healthy life and decent/disciplined characters and not legalizing what is obscene, ulcerously deletarious to the indivisual, the society and the Nation.Law has to enhance habits of life to improve moral and spiritual characters for a healthy society means a healthy nation.Purposefully legalising this vice/un-natural act is an act of provocation and infringement in religious codes. The Constitution has to respect all religious values what soever

Re: Homosexuality in Animals by Rajeev on 02 Jul 2009

I never liked Homosexuals .. but this is what science says"Homosexuality has been observed in more than 1,500 species"

Where does all this hate come from? by Surprised, but glad on 02 Jul 2009

It's amazing to read through the comments and come across so much intolerance and ignorance! I expected nothing less from the religious leaders - homophobia has long been one of the hallmarks of most religions - but the comments were surprising. Being homosexual is not always a matter of preference, and there has been documented evidence of homosexuality in nature - it's not against the natural order, in anyway. Anybody studying Indian history with even one eye open will come across plenty of thinly veiled references to prominent homosexual figures. I wonder where such deep-rooted homophobia originates - maybe the most homophobic people are in denial of their own instincts? Now there's a thought! But I laud the High Court's decision. It's long overdue, and it warms my heart to see such baseless prejudice being swept away, at least by the letter of the law.

Religious nonsense by Sajith Panayil on 02 Jul 2009

Approval from any religious leader unnecessary in this matter. India is a country that can afford all kind of culture. You religious idiots follow or not follow the judgement, it is legal! Stop barking.

Religion for people or people for religion by Kalyan Barua on 02 Jul 2009

Lots of religious leaders are voicing against this historic judgment. In my opinion, religion should for people and people should be allowed to live the way they want to as long as they are not invading others space, way of living or comfort, It is paramount for a democracy to survive. These so called religious leaders have a very narrow way of looking at life. It is alright to me as long same is not forced on us.But they seem to poke their finger into every pie. My request to them is that please stop moral policing and start preaching healthy living. Make way of life the religion not the other way round and incorporate changes to accommodate today's living. Please do not always preach the knowledge gathered eons ago.I am not for homosexuality as I find it unscientific

Indian constitution is supreme and India is secular state by Pattabhi Raman - Raman on 02 Jul 2009

India is secular country. Leave the religious sentiments to individuals to follow or not follow. Many hindus do not follow their religious rituals, and you condem them, many others follow the religion of convinience, should we codem them. Let us not mix up religion with Indian constitution and the Law of the land. Court has said article 377 contradicts freedom of liberty and equality. If religious people want to follow as per their scriptures, please allow them to follow, but do not mix and create noise.

Homosexuality gets the HC approval by Dr. Paras Deo on 02 Jul 2009

Constitution of India is the only'religion' that must be followed in India. The rest must be limited to the 4 walls of private life.

This is a shame for a country by gani on 02 Jul 2009

We are also following the foot steps of the western countries, we have discarded out culture and relegion, the so called gay rights have been legalized, we are all going against the nature and i feel the end is very near, this is so shameful, it is disgusting and we the people who call our self educated and liberated are supporting this, relegion culture and even education does not tell us to go against the law of nature, god has give us such a wonderful gift of living in a sanitated and clean world but the so called gays are going to dirty the whole place up, this high court judges are also gays i guess that is why this decesion has come up, they have listened to the only a few people who are here to ruin our society and ignored the straight people, i wonder when they will get into their senses, this should be apealed in the supreme court and overturned other wise we will soon find boys finding boys in a matrimonial website.

Take it easy by Privado on 02 Jul 2009

Hold on, people. You cant curb something by ignoring it. Being gay is a natural inclination and aligns with individual freedom. If its legalised, doesnt mean folks are gonna re-evaluate their sexual preferences. It just makes lives easier of those souls who cant live their lives due to society dictums. The mullahs

Retired by S. NEGO on 02 Jul 2009

I totally disapproved. I toally agree with the views of religious personalities. The Govt. Should not altall consider to scrap Section 377. Legalisation of homosexualitywill creat lot of problem in the civilised socity in general and among children in particular. It will be very difficlt to explain to children. Our Indian culture and society do not permt such act. I strongly oppose the move of Govt to doaway Section 377.
