New Delhi Certain religious leaders on Thursday strongly disapproved of the Delhi High Court judgement which legalised gay sex among consenting adults. "This is absolutely wrong to legalise homosexuality. We will not accept any such law," Jama Masjid Imam Ahmed Bukhari said. He also critcised the government for trying to amend the Indian Penal Code to scrap section 377 that criminalizes homosexuality. "If the government makes such attempt to scrap the Section 377, we will oppose it strongly," Bukhari said.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahli said homosexuality is not allowed by any religion. "It is against all religions. It is against the culture of Indian society. We feel there is no need to legalise homosexuality. This practice is unnatural. It should continue as a criminal act," he said. Father Dominic Immanuel said that churches have no objection to decriminalisation of homosexuality but it should not be legalised. "We have no objection to decriminalisation of homosexuality because we do not consider these people as criminals on par with other criminals," Immanuel said.

However, churches do not approve of homosexual relations as ethical and moral right of the people, he said. "It is against nature. Our position is that homosexuality should not be legalised," he said, adding such practice will increase paedophilia and HIV/AIDS. The court said Section 377 of the IPC as far as it criminalises gay sex among consenting adults is violation of fundamental rights.

Religion and gay rights by Anil on 02 Jul 2009

Religion is an invention of the few who want to subjugate the rest. Religion is their vehicle for crushing any opinion that is contrary to their beliefs. Religion is a human invention. I have no idea when God, Bhagwan, Allah came along and said to all humans: I hate gays and I hate their behaviour. So go ahead and wipe them from the surface of this planet. 100 years ago, mental illness was also bad and against religion. Saying that the sun was the centre and not earth was also irreligious. I do not understand gay either, but cannot take away their rights as a consequence.Spirituality is a gift to all humans to find their own path to true freedom. Unfortunately, religious dictat from a few gets in its way. How about decent behaviour for a change. Define that!

No one cares about the religious leaders. They can go and take a hike. All they are good at is creating riots.

We Are at the Cross Road: Either We Go Religious Morality way or Follow the West by bashirulqadir on 02 Jul 2009

This is what is likely to happen if we yield to the pressure from the liberal ideas of the West in copying the Western culture. Modernity and progress is all right but should our culture be sacrificed at the altar of Western values and pornography?Sex relation between the same gender is a physiological, gene based psychological condition and deep research should be carried out to reduce the condition. Instead we take the easier option by legalising it. Indian law legalised consensual sex and this has led to unmarried people having pre-marital sex(in India) to reach the level of Europe Now we legalise same sex relation and then as it happens in Europe the places of worship (the clerics, priests of temples and churches) may be asked to approve and solemnize and register unnatural gay and homosexual marriages. Heaven knows where this is going to end. Nabi Gulam Azad has a choice between his religious conviction and his political office.

homosexuality by Kutty on 02 Jul 2009

Religious leaders are right. It is shamedful to discuss homosexuality, but there is minority adicted to that practice. I think all religious leaders wil unite in this matter. Becuase no any heritage aprroves it.
