New Delhi Even as gay communities rejoice over the news that the Government is considering the repealing of the IPC section that criminalises homosexuality, religious leaders have expressed their reservations over the move.

"It (homosexuality) is not at all acceptable and agreeable. It is against the tenets of bible. Man and Woman were created in God's own image. Homosexuality is against the society," Rt Rev Abraham Mar Paulos Episcopa, Head of Marthoma Syrian Church of Malabar diocesan here told PTI.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad is also opposed to any dilution in the Section 377 of IPC.

"It is against the culture and family system in India. It will result in spread of number of diseases. But we will see what changes, if at all, are introduced in the section," said Vinod Bansal, spokesperson of Delhi unit of the Parishad.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, a prominent body of Muslim community too has hit out at the government's proposed move, saying the repeal of the section would create "sexual anarchy" in the society.

it's a shame by prem on 10 Jul 2009

it is a shame that we indians recognize gay sex as not an offense. the court decision has to be repealed and gay sex has to be banned forever. we indians should rise our hands against shameful laws proposed by indian courts. all these things are against GOD. bible tells that a nation accepting this shameful events would be punished. dont accept this law .let us all stand against it and make india retain it's cultural integrity.

Homo sexuality by Vaid S C K on 29 Jun 2009

It is waste of time on arguing in pros and cons of homo sexuality. The mute point is about the article 377 which holds it as criminal offence. People who are supporting its 'repeal' are not actually favouring homo sexuality. So Deobandh or other hindu/Christian organisations should educate the people but should not put pressure on the government to retain such articles. Continuation of unwanted laws only breed corruption and not help in its eradicaion.

re: reply to don't follow the west by Simon Paul, Dombivli on 29 Jun 2009

Dear Mr. Paul, Truth is always bitter whether it's someone from Boston or in Andheri. I've friends who suddenly "realised" they are gay and I know the kind of lives they are leading now. This is completely against nature and common sense even if you were to set religious beliefs aside. I would rather live in a "backward" but healthy country as a rather than a "forward thinking" read (loose moral values) country with full of gays infected by AIDS and other STDs.

The government should go ahead with its plan to scrap sec.377 or amend it suitably to allow people have theirsexual preference.Religious leaders should work among gays and lesbians andtell them that it may be not against law but it is againstwill of God.If they succeed in convincing gay and lesbiancouples, their job is done.Law or, no law.

Dear Mr Jacob MudanthngiliSince you are some much into our culture and heritage, why don't you come and live in India, instead of preaching from Boston!

Religious leaders are behaving like Ayotallah by DR,RELIGION CHOR on 28 Jun 2009

Every person is born equal in front of the law, and no person has the right to surpress anyone.Every person should be given equal rights.Because of religious leaders countries like ours have staggered backwards instead of progressing.Send all sanghis and talibans to Somalia.

Section 377 by Raamesh on 28 Jun 2009

While religious leaders are free to express their opinions, they should not have any precedence over the views of other citizens. Whatever decision the government takes should depend only on constitutional principles. If the government concedes to religious writ, it only defeats constitutional secularism, it also erodes the sovereignty of our democracy.

The response of the so called religious leaders was predictable. The logic of legitimizing gay relations is obvious, but then these leaders were never notorious for their intelligence, were they?

Repeal of Article 377 by Vijay Nair on 28 Jun 2009

This is sheer non-sense. Is the Government trying to inculcate western life style on our values and systems? This is not acceptable to our society and every indian must fight tooth and nail against any attempt by the Government to repeal the Article 377. Homosexuality is alien to our culture and it is against the nature. Hence, it cannot be approved.

Don't follow the west! by Advocate Jacob Mudanthangili, Boston on 28 Jun 2009

I am surprised to hear about a move to repeal Sec. 377 and hope it is not true. The west already destroyed the concept of a strong family and their society already started paying for it. Please don't follow CNN and the western media. India should stand strong for our family values which we built 5000 years ago. I strongly support VHP and Christian churches. We need our children grow up with a balanced family with strong moral values.

Are we not going too far ? by Naim Naqvi on 28 Jun 2009

I have heard Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru talking about Inculcating the scientific attitudes in Indians. Ironically, we are finding ourself in a situation where instead of scientific attitude our government is encouraging sexual attitudes. Are we in a democracy where religion and traditions are completely losing its grips in the name of freedom of opinion ? I am wondering if the next generation of liberals would ask approval of the sexual favors of animals in the name of closer friendship and tacit understanding with the other beings. 'Homosexuality' is a sickness of mind and is prohibited by every religion. The seers of great religions were not absolutely irrational people. A 'sin' has its meanings and relevance. One can't just wish it away. We can't turn a blind eye and give our approval to 'sinning'. The proponents of anarchy should know where to draw the line between the perverted mind and liberal mind. Liberalism should not be transformed into 'Anti Religious Fanaticism'.
