New Delhi, January 26: Multi-hued images of the country's rich cultural heritage and military prowess were showcased at the magnificent Rajpath in New Delhi on Saturday as the nation celebrated the 59th Republic Day amid tight security.

The colourful parade, the main attraction of the national celebrations, marched down the street connecting magnificent Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate as President Pratiba Patil took the customary 21-gun salute.

Soldiers in battle regalia, scintillating show of air power, impressive floats depicting the diverse culture, the country's prized armament and hundreds of colourfully-dressed dancing school children were part of the parade.

The march-past was watched by visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the chief guest, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the country's top political and military brass besides the diplomatic community.

A large number of enthusiastic people came to witness the parade that culminated at the historic Mughal monument of Red Fort.

Minutes before the parade began, the Prime Minister, Defence Minister A K Antony and chiefs of Army, Navy and Air Force laid wreaths at 'Amar Jawan Jyoti', the war memorial at the India Gate where an eternal flame burns in memory of those who laid their lives defending the frontiers of the nation.

A massive ground-to-air security apparatus was put in place in the national capital in the wake of intelligence warning about possible strikes by terrorists.

Snipers of National Security Guards were deployed at all high-rises along the parade route.

Around 20,000 security personnel were deployed across the city while the commandos of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Delhi police kept vigil at important locations.

Republic day parade by richard on 27 Jan 2008

The display of weapons cannot conceal the real state of affairs in this nation. The gap between the rich and poor is increasing. The corruption is increasing. The politicians are becoming more powerful than our laws. We care more about our religion, language and states than our nation. If this continues, what kind of Republic will we pass on to our children?

India by Janak De on 29 Jan 2008

The gap between rich and poor may indeed be widening presently. This is a normal aspect of rapid economic growth and temporary.Rapid economic growth has pulled millions out of poverty. This tempo is increasing and 'Garibi hatao' becoming realistic.Military prowess is neccessary for international status and security, especially for India which inherits responsibility for the security of the Indian Ocean and littoral. India's historic balkanisation has prevented a 'Super Power' role like a unified Chinese Empire normally had, but the Subcontinent's population, intelligence, creativity - in a word, Civilization has historically been among the world leaders, giving India a certain responsibility and destiny. It's awesome watching the oldest and one of the greatest civilizations in the world standing up again after being 'knocked out'for the last 300 years.

Stop display of weapons by jagan on 27 Jan 2008

It is over 60years now we got freedom. It is high time to get real and solve the real problems. Display of few weapons which in all possibility will not be used, to the world, is childish. Yes Republic day is a day of celebration, so we can showcase our cultural and spiritual wealth. But military display is useless as the problems we face cannot be wiped with missiles. USA with all its military might, struggling in Iraq, should be an eye opener to us.

Military prowess display - a cheap trick by Dr.G.G.Rajan on 27 Jan 2008

An achiever never shows off but excels in showing the results.Only a war can show our military supemacy. Many of the display items may be junks. Who knows? Even with these items, we are not able to tackle terror strikes. This only proves intelligence is superior to physical size. This cheap showcase won't work in case of a war.Hence, it is better we stop this non sense.

India is no doubt a great power! You don't like it go to Bangladesh or Pakistan!! by Hemant on 27 Jan 2008

Ramesh Kumar, is that your real name? Of all days you found the Republic Day to vent your venom?

My view by Venkat on 27 Jan 2008

When are we going to start using the armed forces for the real purpose they are established for? These shows is no-sense. It should be used to fight terrorism and defend our borders. On one hand terrosists are entering our country and here we have politicians enjoying these defense force shows.

Republic Day by Yogesh Datta on 27 Jan 2008

India today can not secure its borders from China or Pakistan. In my considered opinion China will make a major incursion, either in Bhutan, Sikkim or Arunachal this year.

There are things in life which can't be only measured in money and what it can do for the poor.

Great Achivements by Luxmiamma on 28 Jan 2008

Today India should be proud of its hard earned achievements. I am proud to be an Asian to learn that. Hope it will work equaly hard on its problems on poverty and cast system to shine out as the best country in the world.

Awrads to Tom, Dick, and Harry by sivsac on 26 Jan 2008

While republic day parade can be celebrated with some fun, it is a sheer waste to award the majority of Commercial people with padma shri, etc...It is well known that ONLY people with clout can get this award. stop this non-sense...now, and forever...

Republic Day- India showcases her Military Prowess by Parminder Gill on 26 Jan 2008

It is sheer wastage of people's money. Instead this money could have used for installing water purification devices, proper vaccination to eradicate the contagious diseases in Indian villages.

Republic Day Parades by subbaraman on 26 Jan 2008

Stop this parade of arms and ammunitions. Let us grow up from childhood and childish display of arms on every Republic Day! Spend the money involved in uplifting the poor people. Highsounding Republic Day Speeches are no remedy for eradication of poverty. Crores of rupees are now spent on this lavishness for the enjoyment of politicians and bureaucrats and their bloated families. Look around, all the shops are open, all public transport system persons working, essential supply workers are working, why should not the bureaucrats and politicians work too on this day, instead of indulging in sheer meaningless rhetoric?

Republic day parade by Suresh on 26 Jan 2008

There should be some day to remember that the country has grown to this level and what u have done for this country. There are so many people who does not know the national anthem. this day makes u think that u should do something for this beautiful land. That is why every celebration is made.
