Though the residents are firmly behind their councilor, many of them feel sanitation conditions in the ward need immediate attention.
However, Councillor Mahender Singh would not contest the ensuing Municipal Council elections as the ward has been reserved for an SC. Singh has no regrets though, since he feels major developmental works were already done during his tenure.
Complaints & expectations
Geeta Devi, a resident of the ward says, “For the residents of the colonies, the poor condition of sanitation is the gravest of all issues. Irregular water supply is also a cause of concern. Though the councillor has got lanes constructed in the colony, they further need to be re-structured. A dirty uncovered drain also needs to be cleaned soon.”
Another resident Rajender Kumar alleged that though the authorities claimed that separate flats had been given to the colony residents, no step has been taken in this regard as yet. “It is not that we do not want a respectable living, but due to lack of enough income resources we have no other option but to put up in any available place. Stray animals, like any other colony of the city, have been a major problem in the area. There are times when bodies of dead animals are left in the open and authorities take no action to clean the areas.”
Sunita Rani, on the other hand, is satisfied with the opening of the seven anganwari schools in the colony. “For poor people like us, ensuring formal education for children is difficult. But with the opening of these schools, at least the children get an opportunity to look forward to a brighter future,” Rani said.
Councillorspeak
Talking to Newsline, Councillor Mahender Singh said, “Though I would not be contesting the coming MC elections, I am satisfied with the developmental works I initiated. Pending projects were also completed. Efforts were also made so that electricity connections of the ward could be legalised.”
