Kolkata, June 18 The residents of Behala will not have any respite from flooding not only for this year but also for the next couple of years, say civic officials.

Besides the residential areas and roads in the area, the Borough committee offices also face waterlogging.

The office of Borough 13 has been under water for the last two days and attendance in the office remained at 50 per cent. “No steps have been taken to clear the stagnant water,” said Dr M K Basu, Medical Officer, Borough 13.

“We are locked in our houses. For going out, we are forced to hire a rickshaw for Rs 30-40,” said S K Saha, a resident of ward no 128 of Behala.

“It is dangerous to move on the waterlogged streets, as these are full of potholes, stones and half-open manholes,” added Saha.

“There is no way to pump out the stagnant water. The work undertaken by the Kolkata Environment Improvement Project has choked the drains, thereby obstructing the rainwater to drain out,” said Sovan Chatterjee, Chairman, Borough 14, Behala.

“Dredging of canals has not been completed and many of the portable pumps are not working. It is sheer lack of planning and we cannot do much to ease the pain of the common man,” said Partha Chatterjee, local MLA.

Admitting to mismanagement in the handling the situation, Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya said he was not happy with the pace of the KEIP work.

“The drainage system has been choked in many areas and ward126 and 127 are the worst hit. Portable pumps have not been operated properly to drain out water,” said Bhattacharya.
