Kolkata, February 8 The widening rift between Calcutta High Court Bar association members was visible today after counsels indulged in a heated political argument in the court room. The arguments prompted Chief Justice SS Nijjar to advise them to settle their dispute outside the court room.

A section of counsels of the bar association moved a plea before the bench today, asking for a CBI probe on the spate of violence at Nandigram between November 5 to 12. Advocates of rival groups, Subrata Mukhopadyay and Rabi Shankar Chatterjee, pleaded before the bench that the Bar Association of the High Court had not taken a unanimous decision before filing the petition calling for a CBI probe.

It was alleged that only a section of the bar members took the decision and that the association was acting with political motivation. Many association members, out of about 5,500 advocates, were aggrieved by the decision to file a petition on the renewed violence and recapture of Nandigram by CPI(M) cadres.

The two advocates sought permission from the Bench to file an application in the matter. It was then that the Chief Justice asked them to settle the dispute on the decision of Bar Association outside the court room. After the hearing, advocate Subrata Mukhopadyay and Rabi Shankar Chatterjee told mediapersons that they would file an application with the bench against the petition filed by the Bar.

On January 11, this bench had directed the state government to file an affidavit regarding the renewed violence at Nandigram, within eight weeks. The matter would have come for hearing after 10 weeks.

Rift in Bar association, members argue in court room by Dave Jones on 09 Feb 2008

Sir Only if they were any good at arguing. It is everyones knowledge that solicitors/advocates rely on telling lies to their clients. When the case seemed to be over and done then it is no exaggeration that these clever and truthful advocates take a dip in pond ie absent from court. My father used to say that do not become a Vakil(UKIL)as they all are liars. Worthwhile presentation of a case they rarely do sir.I have also asked now a judge Sir what do you value most in your work ? he answered to get a person guilty of murder get him released or change the case to Manslaughter. Such is their professionRegards
