New Delhi, March 11: Set to gather further steam in the next one year with a huge surplus of Rs 1,00,000 crore, Indian Railways will begin the much-awaited Kolkata-Dhaka service from April 14.

"In a historic decision, we have decided that the Kolkata-Dhaka train service would begin from the Bengali New Year (April 14)," Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said replying to a debate on the Railway Budget 2008-09 which was passed by the Lok Sabha.

Hitting out at the previous NDA government for poor performance of the railways and inability to pay even Rs 2473 crores dividend, Prasad said when the UPA government completes its term next year the Railways would have a total surplus of about Rs 1,00,000 crore. It has already generated a surplus of Rs 69,000 crore in the past four years.

"We are not dependent any more on the Finance Ministry or the government for money as we have our own resources" Prasad said winding up a marathon debate.

He said Indian Railways which has reached number three position in the world would aspire to occupy the number one slot in the near future.

The minister said tendering process for the ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) is over and the work on the projects would begin soon.

Prasad said resources for the projects was no more an issue. "Irrespective of funding from foreign institutions, Railways has decided to go ahead with the East and West DFCs," he said.

Travelling in any train has become such a pain by Anthony on 11 Mar 2008

Laloo has made all trains renamed as superfast trains but the speed remains the same and the vibrations of the dirty horrible compartments have increased. The food supplied on the train is so bad and passengers have to worry about rats and cocroches in the compartments.

Hail Laloo !! Best minister in Center !! by VJ on 11 Mar 2008

Hail Laloo !!He has done a great job and deserves to become next PM, replacing MMS immediately.Just imagine how much he can do for the country, going by the track record of what he has done for Railways. (But, do not ask what he had done for Bihar, that's past and let's forget the past misdeeds).Wish him all the best !!

Hi Lalu!!! Another Scam by Amit on 12 Mar 2008

I am really concern about the Railway budget and surplus funds in railway. It seems to me major scandal and he might be reading debit as credit and annoncing profits instead of losses of that amount.

Nair by Ravi on 11 Mar 2008

I dislike Laloo...but he is a effective manager. He won when everyone failed...looks like it's herd behaviour

Rly set to pile up Rs 1,00,000 cr surplus: Lalu by Kumar on 11 Mar 2008

piece of crap, this guy is just fooling everybody. Indian railways is worst than ever. If he has so much surplus then he should clean up the mess first, it won't cost 100000 crore to put decent toilets and clean stations. this guy is a charlatan.

Railway Surplus 100000 Cr by Jagdish Lal on 11 Mar 2008

Such tall and misleading claims are being made by Sh Lallu Prasad then why Railways are not laying at least 2500 Kms of new Lines every year?

Indian Railway sucks by Ram on 11 Mar 2008

Bluffing as usual by DILIP/FRANCE on 11 Mar 2008

Fooling the masses by Rishi on 11 Mar 2008

They have sold prime railway land and rented some in big cities, that is how there is a huge surplus.

One excuse by Sambar Swamy on 11 Mar 2008

Thnaks! one excuse. In what places these lands were sold? But I think Indian Rlwys may also be minting money (I mean real minting): else how come so much profit

Laloo is useless by Sambar Swamy on 11 Mar 2008

I know he is saving money and generating funds further but I have to criticize Laloo. Yes, what he is doing wrong. Let me see how. Why can't he run more trains to Ayodah? Even if he spends many years in the Rlwys the money generated is NOT by his leadership. It is beacuse of our IAS officers. But do not ask me why these IAS officers did not generate money since Independence. That's because, I am in search of excuses. I don't know but laoo is useless!!! that's it

Railway surplus by JKS on 11 Mar 2008

Laloo is showing his color now. Why cannot he utilize this money in plans for future.

Railway surplus by raj on 11 Mar 2008

How did Laloo make such a big profit for the Railways in such short time? He made a huge profit of 25000 crore in four years. And now he predicts, 100000 Crore , after this all he is asking money to the Finance Minister funds for the development of the railway. When Nitish Kumar was railway minister he never claimed to make so much but he did a good job and was close to making profits. Laloo is enjoying the fruits today. Nitish managed to give his divisional share profit back to the government. Now that Laloo is making so much profits, why does he want more money? Can he clear all the old debts of the railways with the government? During Nitish time there was a cess charged of 1RS to the Railway Security Force fund, where is it? Sources say almost 71000 crores was collected. Now hos does Laloo show these profits? The railways like many big manufacturing companies keeps 33% of its income for maintenance and repairs. At least this happened till Laloo took over. Laloo simply reduced this to 12% and started showing profits. If he was such a big management guru....why didn't it work in Bihar?
