Chandigarh, March 13 Road accidents again featured in the Punjab Assembly today when Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla demanded a uniform policy on compensation.

In the zero hour, Jagdish Raj Sahni of the BJP moved a resolution on accidents on the Amritsar-Pathankot road, where ten people were killed two days ago and four yesterday. He said the road was also in bad shape. On this, PWD and B&R Minister PS Dhindsa said this road was a National Highway and comes under the purview of NHAI. They would, however, order an inquiry, he said. “The sewerage system in the cities is not properly laid, which affects the roads,” he added.

Meanwhile, Badal said, “We will give a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for the injured.”

Chawla said, “Hoardings displaying vulgar pictures of women adjacent to the liquor vends should be removed.”

Political vendetta
Ajit Singh Mofar said a BDPO in Mansa went to a house in Jhanda Khurd village and allegedly demolished it. “The local police arrested three brothers present in the house in a false case of attempt to suicide,” he said, adding that this was political vendetta. The CM assured that a thorough inquiry would be ordered.

Sukh Sarkaria alleged a Dalit woman Balwinder Kaur of Chak Misrikhan village in Rajasansi, who is a Congress worker, was badly beaten up by unscrupulous elements at the behest of a sub-inspector posted at a police station in Lopoke. Badal said he would ask Punjab DGP NPS Aulakh to submit a report and action would be taken against the guilty.
