Road accidents kill 27, injure 30 in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, October 14: At least 27 people were killed and 30 others injured in two separate road accidents in Uttarakhand on Tuesday, police said.

Twenty people were killed when a bus in which they were travelling fell into a gorge at Dachla area in Tehri district.

The incident occurred when the bus, which was carrying nearly 45 passengers, skidded off the road and fell into the gorge, killing 20 occupants of the vehicle on the spot. The bus was going to Devprayag town of the district from Rishikesh.

Two other passengers succumbed to their injuries in the hospital, they said.

The injured have been admitted to different hospitals in Rishikesh and Dehra Dun, they said.

In another incident, a jeep carrying 12 members of a family fell into a deep gorge at Kolhukhet area in Mussoorie of Dehra Dun district early today killing five people on the spot, police said. Seven others were injured in the accident.

The family, belonging to Bachheli village of Tehri district, was proceeding towards the city when the accident occurred.

Chief Minister B C Khanduri has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the accidents and asked the District Magistrates of the districts concerned to provide best possible medical facilities to the victims.

Khanduri also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50000 to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 25000 to seriously injured and Rs 5000 to those with minor injuries.
