The premise is homage to the mother of all “outing movies”, Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri. But Anjan Dutt’s Chalo Let’s Go, thankfully doesn’t reside in its formidable shadow. Instead it charts a different journey altogether, which is charming albeit cliché-driven. But we are not complaining this time.
If Dutt’s Bong Connection was flimsy and indeed a tentative attempt to deconstruct Bangaliana, Chalo Lets Go is an infinitely better and confident effort. Through his motley characters, Dutt makes cheeky digs at various Bengali idiosyncrasies, and guess what, this time we are laughing with him.
So a sex-starved chemistry professor (Barun Chanda), a constipated bachelor (Neel), a nagging wife (Bidipta Chakarborty), an erudite divorcee (Churni Ganguly), a debauch bachelor (Arindam Sil) and a henpecked bhodrolok (Kaushik Ganguly) collaborate to represent various facets of Bangaliana with élan. Their journey through North Bengal along with their tour operators, Parambrata, Rudranil, Saswata and Ritwick, who are failed musicians who have set up a travel agency from hell, is what Chalo Let’s Go is all about.
The film also throws up some compelling performances. Check out Rudranil as the unlucky-in-love youngster who strikes gold and Kaushik Ganguly’s interpretation of the quintessential henpecked bhadrolok who whimpers at the sight of his pint sized wife. Hilarious to say the least.
