Chandigarh, February 4 The city traffic police have proposed widening of major roads to curb hours-long traffic snarls on city roads, particularly during the peak hours, The matter was discussed with the UT Administration, asking the Engineering Wing to start and complete the widening of roads on priority basis.

The roads, which have been proposed to be widened, include IT park lightpoint to Sector 3-4-9-10 roundabout; Vikas Marg; Industrial Area Phase-I, II, Sector 29-30 roundabout to Batra theatre roundabout on Dakshin Marg; Industrial Area Phase-I, II, Sector 29-30 roundabout to Transport lightpoint on Purv Marg and Railway lightpoint to village Daria.

Besides the widening of the roads mentioned in the proposal, the traffic police have also asked the Engineering Department to construct road dividers (medians), from Shanti Path to Vikas Marg, i.e. roads dividing Sector 46-47; 45-46; 44-45; 43-44; 42-43; 41-42; 40-41; 39-40 and 39-Maloya village. While the Administration has already constructed medians on some of the roads, there are others where medians are yet to be constructed.

While talking to Newsline, Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) AS Ahlawat, said, “Besides widening of roads and construction of medians, we have also asked the Engineering department to expedite installation of Automatic Traffic Control (ATC) Signals at the Sector 20 Gurudwara roundabout, Kisan Bhawan roundabout and Labour Chowk at the earliest. The administration has set a deadline of February 29 for completion of the work of installing traffic signals.”

It is pertinent to mention that the traffic situation is extremely chaotic on the Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg, Vikas Marg and Purv Marg, during peak hours (8.30 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm).

“We receive numerous calls from people, reporting traffic jams, congestion and blockades at the busy roads during peak hours. We try our level best to clear the congestion but the roads are designed in such a way that they cannot accommodate more than a given number of vehicles at a time. As the vehicle-population is phenomenally increasing with each passing day, the situation is likely to worsen if the roads are not widened in time,” another senior traffic police official said.
