What do students do when they get bored? They get-together and rock. And that’s what this group of 20 Panjab University students did. Quite literally. They, formed a group named Youth United, booked a hall in Indira Holiday Home, Sector 24, zeroed down on Michael as their trainer and organised a rocking workshop — that of rock-an-roll. “Bored of books, tired of the much-hyped Valentine’s Day and done with Salsa, we wanted change,” Saloni, lists the reasons that prompted them to organise the three-day workshop, which on the very first look reels its success story. With over 50 students packed in the hall, there were another 40 waiting for their class to start. While inside, the instructor’s voice echoed with streaming commands — twist now, stretch your arm, add swing to your steps and dance to the rhythm, outside, the hustle-bustle of those waiting for the clock to strike 5:00 pm (time of the next session) was deafening.
“Sporty and fun, the fact that the dance isn’t as formal as other couple dances, made it a crowd puller,” tells Vibhor Goyal of Pharmacy Department, one of the organisers, adding that to spread awareness about the workshop, six help desks were set up in different colleges of the city. This, being a “testing-water campaign. Seeing the success of the workshop, we will now hold more of these after the exam season,” Vibhor talks about the future plans.
While, the workshop was for them, the profit made from the venture, “will be used to teach the underprivileged students,” chorus the group, before swaying back to their partners arm on John Travolta’s numbers. This one’s to rocking times!
