Mumbai Excited about the launch of the people's car, the Nano, Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata on Monday said the project was not conceived to satisfy his ego, nor was the Rs 1-lakh pricing a "gimmick".

"I am very satisfied and excited about this launch and Nano is not for my ego-trip...certainly, not an ego-trip at all," Tata said at an editors meeting in Mumbai.

The price of Rs 1-lakh was announced six-years ago when the Nano plan was unveiled at an European motor show, he said, adding that the fact that the company has kept its promise goes to show that it was not a "gimmick".

All the first one-lakh customers who would be picked up through a draw of lots from the bookings between April 9-25, will be sold the car at the price that would be formally announced soon, he said.

This was despite the fact that cost of steel and other materials had gone up, he said.

The car has 21 per cent more space than the smallest car available now and 12-13 per cent more than other small cars in the country, he said.

Asked after launching the cheapest car, would he now be going in for the cheapest truck or an SUV, Tata replied in the negative.

"The quest for the cheapest truck or SUV does not arise," he said.

To a question as to what could be his next dream, Tata said that he has not given a thought to it at the moment.

"I don't rule out anything or necessarily commit," he said, when asked if he still would set up a Nano plant at Singur (West Bengal) from where the company was forced out due to political opposition last year.

The company was committed to setting up a cancer hospital in West Bengal, he said, adding that some of the manufacturing facilities and sheds at Singur were still there.

its disheartening to see that people are more than enthusiastic at voicing opinions which is based on fale propaganda and is far from the truth.i have some points to make:1.tata's singur project wud be assembly line manufacturing process.so where lies the scope for "mass employment"2.not far from singur is hindmotors where ia similar automobile factory by the birlas is situated...what "staggering development" has it done to hindmotor?3.is it really imp to have a 200 acre garden and car parking at the cost of fertile land people are not willing to part with?4.why have the ponds and the lakes around singur been filled up and taken control by cpm cadres when the news of tatas coming to bengal first got flashed?they wanted to sell to to real estate pimps and now that the project got shelved its these people who are creating ruckus.cos at the end of the day its about money5.didnt the tatas have plan to start their low budget flats in the near vicinity lke the ones in pune and thane?

TATA a man of gem by GANDHI on 25 Mar 2009

There are so many rich industrialists, but the only one, who think this most welcome creation TATA's NANO, a cheapest car in the world for everyone. I say bravo to Mr.Ratan TATA, a man with the poor peoples. We will never forget him.

Nano Vs. Mamta by Priyanka Choudhury on 24 Mar 2009

After the Singur episode, the gala launch of "NANO" gives a tight slap on the face of TMC leader Mamata Banarjee, who, just for the sake of opposing the West Bengal CM and the ruling party ,destroyed the prospects of Industrial developments in Bengal. On the other side, Ratan Tata, after the tragic Tajmahal episode and Singur issue, stood up erect and showed the world why the brand is unique and gives a tough competition to the world's biggest companies.

Tata Nano-Pride of the Nation by Dr B Sundara on 24 Mar 2009

The Nano is out. A great dream realised. May be millions of Indian small families will have a safe transpot of their own.Tata is a pride of the nation. His views about Singur is appriciable. Perhaps time may come when another facility to manufacture Nano arise and Singur may find a place in the scheme of things. Those disappointed now may find a cause to cheer. The Nano is an appropriate technology for the present and the future considering the need to save fuel, road and parking spaces , not only in India but also around the world. Even if the cost need to be increased to make it more luxurious, it should a welcome development for the more descerning customers who can opt for such small cars and contribute to conserve fuel and reduce pollution. The Nano may find great market within and ouside India. We Indians may feel proud to own it, for it is Indian. The cheaper cost need not be a deterrant and make us feel low.
