Khanna, March 9 Parliamentry Secretary Bikramjeet Singh Khalsa won the last Assembly elections from Khanna by defeating former PPCC chief Shamsher Singh Dullo. Khalsa was an MLA from Dakha in 1997. Somesh Batta talks to Bikramjeet Singh Khalsa about his plans to develop his constituency.

Khanna Assembly constituency is lagging behind on the index of development. What are your views?
After the formation of SAD (B) and BJP government in the state, various development works have been initiated. Rs 2.80 crore has already been released of which Rs 1.80 crore is being spent on the rural areas. The town has been included in the 40 towns of the state under a master plan to develop sewerage and sanitation system in the state. The Municipal Council has been provided with sufficient funds for the overall development of the town.

What are the plans to promote education in the constituency?
An Adarsh school is being set up in the constituency. Three schools from villages Ikolaha, Issru and Gosla are being upgraded. For this purpose, more than Rs 40 lakh has already been released. We have already proposed to start a technical education institution in the constituency, which may be a polytechnic college or a business management institution.

Don't you think that the health care in the constituency needs more expansion?
We have already proposed to upgrade the Civil Hospital and I have taken up the matter with Punjab State Health Corporation to develop the hospital as a Multispeciality Trauma Unit.

What is being done to tackle the traffic problem in the town, especialy at the GT Road?
We have had two meetings with the National Highway Authorities of India. There are proposals to construct an elevated road and build two bridges at the GT Road. This will reduce the traffic congestion.

You had promised during elections to make Khanna a district. What progress has been made in this regard?
As soon as the District Reorganisation Committee in the state is set up, the case of Khanna will be taken on priority basis.
