Many of the government school buildings in the city may be in need of immediate repairs, but the UT Education department has something else on its priority list: dustbins. The department is spending exorbitant amounts on special dustbins which will be placed in all 104 government school across the city.

Under its clean-up drive, the department is placing dustbins worth around Rs 50 lakh in the schools.

The cost of each dustbin is around Rs 5,000 and according to officials, 10 dustbins will be placed in each school. Adhar Shila, in Industrial Area, Chandigarh, and Neha Creations, Mohali, were given the contract of manufacturing these dustbins. The material used in these dustbins is fibre, whose environmental concerns are yet to be found out.

These dustbins will be embedded in the ground with iron cases to avoid any chances of damage to them or their theft.

Justifying the department’s idea of placing dustbins worth Rs 50 lakh in schools, Director Public Instructions (Schools) S K Setia said: “We have sufficient funds allocated for this purpose and these dustbins will not be ordinary ones. These are not the usual plastic or iron ones but made of fibre which makes them permanent and long lasting. It is going to be a one-time expense. Special spots around the school campus will be identified to place these dustbins.”
