New Delhi, March 17 Members of the ruling Congress and the BJP came to blows on the first day of the Assembly Session at Vidhan Sabha today.

The ruckus in the state Assembly erupted even as Lt.Governor Tejendra Khanna gave his inaugural speech when Leader of the Opposition Jagdish Mukhi began protesting loudly against the state government for shortage of water in the national capital.

Mukhi was joined by other BJP members, who wore posters saying that there was no water in Delhi. Some members also wore posters which read: “Masterplan is a disaster plan”.

Matters took a turn for the worse when BJP MLA Vijay Jolly approached Speaker Chaudhry Prem Singh’s seat and hung a poster in front of the Speaker.

His colleague Karan Singh Tanwar also started sticking these posters in the Assembly hall. Jolly was accosted by Congress MLA Bhishm Sharma and the two got into a physical scuffle.

MLAs Ramesh Bidhuri, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Mukesh Sharma, Nasib Singh intervened and separated the two. The Assembly’s tumultuous start was expected with Delhi going to the polls in December this year.

The Speaker said that while action was not being taken against the MLAs, the incident was “truly shameful” and that unlike other states, this is the first time that Delhi MLAs had actually come to blows within the premises of the Vidhan Sabha. The Assembly session is to continue till April 4.
