Mumbai The Indian rupee edged lower in early trade on Monday as lower Asian shares raised concerns of more capital outflows from the domestic market while a stronger dollar overseas also hurt.

At 9:10 a.m., the partially convertible rupee was at 49.01/02 per dollar, weaker than its Friday's close of 48.87/88.

At 9:10 a.m., Hong Kong's main index was down 2.1 per cent and Japan's key index shed 1.3 per cent, Korea's index was marginally lower.

The yen rose against major currencies on Monday after poor economic data in the United States and the euro zone heightened investors' fears about a prolonged economic recession.

However, the dollar index, a gauge of the dollar's performance againt other major currencies was up 0.24 per cent.
