Rural Olympics gain momentum as tournament approaches end

Kila Raipur (Ludhiana), February 9 As the Kila Raipur Rural Sports Festival approaches the end, the rural Olympics have started getting momentum.

On the penultimate day today, greyhounds stole the show. And then, excitement reached a frenzied pitch in the bullock cart race. The sun shining down in all its splendour, after a cold and breezy opening yesterday, added to the happy environs. A number of foreigners could be seen mingling with the spectators in the field.

As a new addition to these games, the organisers had called some good gymnasts, who performed gracefully to the beat of the music. In athletics, Ghamanda Ram of Rajasthan, India’s numero uno in 800 metres who also participated in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, was the star today. He was an easy winner in the 1,500 metre race, clocking 4 minutes.

The tug-of-war called upon the participants to show their best. The martial arts by the Nihang Singhs drew repeated applause from the big gathering.

The results are as follows.

1500 mt: 1. Ghamanda Ram (Army), 2. Satnam Singh (Jalandhar), 3. Jaskaran Singh (COE Patiala). 200 mt Girls Senior final: 1. Mandeep Kaur (Jalandhar), 2. Navpreet Kaur (Patiala), 3. Deepti (Ludhiana). 400 mt Men OPEN: 1. Amrik Rana (Meerut), 2. Azad Veer (Jalandhar), 3. Ali (B.S.F Jalandhar). 100 mt Men Final: 1. Ajay Kumar (B.S.F), 2. Samsher Partap Singh (Khalsa College Jalandhar), 3. Amrik Rana Meerut (B.S.F).

800 mt women final: 1. Iqbal Kaur (Tanda Urmur), 2. Narinder Kaur (Patiala), 3. Kiranjit Kaur (Jalandhar). 200 mt race girls under 19 final: 1. (Deepti Ludhiana), 2. Harpal Kaur (Sunam), 3. Paramjit Kaur (Sangrur). Long Jump girls: 1. Navpreet Kaur (Patiala), 2. Ramandeep Kaur (Katana Sahib), 3. Simran Jeet Kaur (Katana Sahib). Bull Cart Race: First Heat 1. Harjinder Singh from Kanganwal. 2. Sukhi from USA.

Second Heat 1. Baljinder Singh Dehlon (B). 2. Amar Singh Sandhaur. Third Heat 1. Lakhvir Singh Dhaul Majara. 2. Balwinder Singh Kulewal. Fourth Heat 1. Gurdeep Singh Bhanjaur. 2. Cheenu Jalaldiwal. Fifth Heat 1. Naib Kalsia. 2. Baljinder Singh Dehlon (A).
