New Delhi, March 10: Women in rural areas get lesser wages than men for equal hours of work, government informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

"This disparity in wages could be attributed to existing social norms and practices as well as inadequate accounting of the overall work output of women in rural areas," Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said.

Referring to the law in this regard, the minister said "the Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 provides for payment of equal remuneration to men and women for the same work or work of similar nature".

In a separate question the Minister said the government has launched specific policy intervention programmes such as Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY), Swarnjayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY), Pradhan Mantri Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) for districts with chronic unemployment.
