Rushdie still burdened by 20-year-old fatwa

New York Nearly 20 years after being driven underground by a religious decree, he is now Sir Salman Rushdie, properly famous and free, yet still burdened by his status as a symbol of persecution.

"This is the albatross around my neck," the novelist said on Sunday night during a conversation with author-activist Irshad Manji at the 92nd Street Y on Manhattan's Upper East Side.

The 61-year-old Rushdie said he would rather be known as an artist than as a social critic, and worried that the attacks against his religious satire, 'The Satanic Verses', had obscured "the real person that I am and the actual value of the books."

But the author did seem to enjoy himself as he took on Islamic fundamentalists, President George W Bush and other objects of his liberal disdain. He was mostly relaxed and jovial despite his reluctance to revisit the death sentence by Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

"The Satanic Verses" was released in late 1988 to critical acclaim and furious protest, with Muslims burning copies in the street and demonstrating around the world. On Feb 14, 1989, the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a religious decree, or fatwa, calling for the author to be killed.

Rushdie, a native of India who had moved to London, was forced into hiding and lived for years under British protection. The 500-page "Satanic Verses" became an international best-seller, although widely regarded as having far more buyers than readers.

The Ayatollah is long dead and Rushdie has stopped worrying about his safety, although the fatwa has never been withdrawn.

Maybe you are the real Hypocrite by viv on 19 Jan 2009

pam Ammen , before you start ridiculing others..i have a simple question? Have you read the book "Satanic verses".I am sure you have not ...you have been consumed by the usual hatred philosophy against a person by listening to others. Please take the trouble to read this person's book...then come back ..and hopefully apologise for your own ignorance...

Have you read between the lines? by pamameen on 20 Jan 2009

viv, I swear I recognize rushdie's writing as I recongnise my mother. The hatred philosophy that you talk about is on every page of Rusdie's book. He has deliberately at the bidding of his rich paymasters, penned the book hating the man Muhammad and his religion. I owe no apologogy and it is Rushdie who owes an apology to Muslims for his vilification, hatred, ridicule, mockery, insult and wanton mud slinging and reviling. What will be your reaction if some one uses the names of you, your wife, daughters, sisters and your virtuous mother(all of them are higly respected and dignified moralists)in a so called fiction book and describe them as pimps, prostitutes, sluts and scums. Real names of your family members are used and will you tolerate it as fiction, learn to put yourself in the position of others and think deeply fearing God.And kill your anti-Islam bias Mr viv.We have to co-exist respecting each others religion and culture to save India.

POSITIVE CHANGE IS WELCOME by Indian on 19 Jan 2009

Rushdie should use his writing skills to do some Positive things.... Right

Salman Rushdie is a Hypocrite by pam.ameen on 19 Jan 2009

What kind of Muslim are you Irfan, a Muslim is not a Muslim if he does not believe that one who is an enemy of One True Almighty God( in Arabic called Allah)is enemy of a Muslim, you openly and unashamedly support an enemy of God- that is Salman Rushdie, Will anybody write a flowing, beautiful poem about the private part of his own mother and bring the poem to the open market and read it loud and clear to the audience. If someone does it he should be a lunatic, will youi do it about your mother, but that is exactly what Salman Rushdie did, he fabricated, concocted, lied, ridiculed, mocked, insulted and discredited the Quran , Islam and the greatest prophet and you support him under the guise of a Muslim name, shame on you, May God Almighty teach you a lesson Insha Allah, Wake up man and read, Good English writing is nothing to do with high quality morals, Salman Rushdie is a low class and cheap pornographic filth and his only qualification is English language which he uses to make immoral earnings by ridiculing all cultures including that of Indian sub-continent. People like you are either ignorant or stupid to the core.

Salman Rushdie is a Hypocrite by W.B.Fernando on 19 Jan 2009

Mr. Irfan in my opinion is a true Muslim. It is the perverted people who make unreasonable judgements on others

Are you a christian Fernando by kodimiran on 25 Jan 2009

Mr Fernando, your name sounds Christian, are you a practising christian? or a namkevaste one?Do you know the respect that both old testament and the new testament gives to the mightiest prophet Abraham and his progeny, and in salaman Rushdie's book Satanic Verses,Rushdie calls the mighty prophet Abraham as a bastard,( may God forgive me for repeating).Fernando, either you throw Rushdie out as a garbage or you throw your Christian belief as non-sense, you can not have the cake and eat it too, people like are completely incomprehensible and despicable, you do not make a difference between good and dirty literature that Rushdies writes about. Stop becoming a hypocrite simply because you hate islam,

You have every right by pamameen on 20 Jan 2009

You have every right to your opinion, you will never understand Rushdie until some one writes a book totally insulting your family Fernando, Rushdie's book is nothing but lies and insults, there is not a single thread of truth in it. He calls it fiction to hoodwink the ignorant.Put yourself in the position of one belonging to the family of Prophet Muhammad and then read the book and then you will understand.

Fatwas by KVSKumar on 19 Jan 2009

OK Mr. Ameen, accepted that Rushdie is bad, worse and worst. But could you please tell the readers as to why there is no 'Fatwas' from imams in India against notorious terrorists Osama, Al-Zawahiri, Talibans etc. and smugglers like Dawood and Co.all of whom together are killing innocents? Are they all leading life as per the tenets of Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammed? If Rushie is sinner Almight God (Allah) will punish him. Please ask your mullahs not to be in Allah's shoes. If they say they have the right, then ask them to be impartial.

Fatwa is not my business. by pamameen on 20 Jan 2009

my writing says nothing about the fatwa given by an Iranian scholar, so I have no right to say why fatwa on this and no fatwa on that etc The greatest fatwa on killing the innocent people on earth has been clearly given at several places in the holy scriptures including the Qur’an which at one place says, If anyone kills an innocent it is equal to killing the entire humanity and if anyone saves the life of an innocent it is equal to saving the entire humanity, see how beautiful the fatwa of One True Almighty God is and why do we need further fatwas and so based on this the names of some of the people that you mention have already been judged. Even in the case of Rushdie, Britain should have allowed a court case to be commenced and heard on the complaints of Muslims under the Race Discrimination laws, but UK a so called civilized nation did not want to do this simply because the libel, the ridicule and insult was not on Christianity or Judaism but Islam and Britain followed the common law of my enemy's enemy is my friend, usual divide and rule and usual racial prejudice and after all racial prejudice is the mother of prejudices and Britain is not an exception to this common law and long live the hypocrisy and double standard of the West

Follow Allah Not Mullah by Anil Sabaji on 19 Jan 2009

Hello Ifran,We need Indians like you to uplift the image of Muslims in india. Proud of you yaar. There is another fellow muslim Pam Ameen calling rushdi an enemy of God. Is he a fool to think that any man can be a enemy of almighty you call him allah or God? If God consideres him an enemy may be rushdi would not have even born. I think many muslims still follow Mullah not Allah yaar. After a long time seen a muslim brother so vocal on Indianism.

Follow Allah,not Rushdie by A.Kader on 19 Jan 2009

Salman Rushdie ridiculed even Mahatma Gandhi describing him as a sexual pervert in an American magazine a few years ago.Rushdie loves publicity at any cost.It does not matter for him who the victim is:Allah or Gandhi.

Salman Rushdie - M.F Hussain comparable?? by Aseem Juneja on 19 Jan 2009

Pam.Ameen - I just read your comment. Would that mean you support People (Read Hindus) violence against MF Hussain?? He has done no less than Rushdie by depiciting Hindu Goddesses in obscene manner...I know you are wrong. Is your belief so weak to be strangled by one Rushdie??

MF Hussain is wrong by pamameen on 20 Jan 2009

MF Hussain is certainly wrong in depicting Hindu goddesses the way he has done even though Hindu artists may be allowed to do what MF Hussain has done, well punish him and sue him but why do you want to make a wrong to correct a wrong, you will not murder the daughter of a criminal who murdered your father, the leading Islamic scholars condemn MF Hussain for his actions, how many Muslim scholars consider him within the recognized boundaries of Islamic ethics. Treat each case based on its merit, do not judge every anti-Muslim action using MF Hussains's anti-Hindu yard stick. Law of God should apply to everyone equally and equitably. There is unity of humanity and unity of God.
