New York, January 11: Describing the LTTE as the "most dangerous and deadly extremist" outfit in the world, the FBI has asked donors to be careful about charities established as front organisations by the rebel group to raise funds to finance its terrorist activities.

The group, FBI said, has placed operatives right in the United States to discreetly raise money to purchase weapons and explosives and to fund its "terrorist campaign" in Sri Lanka.

LTTE has "quite a resume" as a terrorist group that is credited with perfecting the use of suicide bombers, inventing suicide belts and pioneering the use of women in suicide attacks, the top investigating agency said.

The rebel group's "ruthless tactics" has inspired terrorist networks worldwide, including al Qaeda in Iraq, it added.

Stating that LTTE has killed some 4,000 people in its campaign of "violence and bloodshed" in the last two years, FBI said its operatives have assassinated two world leaders, "the only terrorist organization to do so."

The FBI did not mention the names but LTTE is known to be behind the assassinations of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa in 1993.

The FBI warning comes within days of the Sri Lankan government abrogating a ceasefire agreement with LTTE amidst fears that the conflict could escalate in coming days.

In its campaign to seize control of the country from the Sinhalese ethnic majority and create an independent Tamil state, FBI said, the LTTE has launched suicide attacks, assassinated politicians and committed all kinds of crimes to finance its operations.

The resulting civil war has taken the lives of nearly 70,000 Sri Lankans on both sides of the conflict since 1983 alone, FBI added.

The US government had designated the Tigers as a foreign terrorist organisation.

"We're determined to stop them, using the full range of our investigative and intelligence capabilities," FBI asserted.

In April, for example, Joint Terrorism Task Force in New York had arrested the alleged US director of the Tigers, it said.

The man was alleged to have held several fund-raising events at a church and various public schools in Queens and in northern New Jersey in 2004.

He is also accused of arranging high-level meetings between the group's leaders and US supporters.

"We've also arrested another 11 Tamil Tiger-related suspects in the New York City region. And in Baltimore, following a multi-agency investigation, a pair of Indonesian men pleaded guilty and were sentenced recently for working with others to export surface to air missiles, state-of -the-art firearms, machine guns and night vision goggles to the Tigers in Sri Lanka," the FBI said.

FBI did the right thing by Eranga on 19 Jan 2008

Most Indians have wrong image about Sri Lanka. Most of them don't know real situation in side the country. Slogan of the LTTE is they are fighting for equal rights. But as a Sri Lankan I can't accept their issue. Majority of Sri Lanka is Sinhalese but there are considerable numbers of Tamils and Muslims. As a minority of the country they still have respectable place in the community. We have more than 30 tamil MP's in the parliament, our former police commender was a Tamil man, former foreign minister who was assassinated by LTTE sniper late Lakshman Kadiragaman him self was a tamil. I believe those existing issues can be resolved by negotiation not by the brutal way. Last three days LTTE has killed 44 innocent civil people include children and women. So I believe FBI did the right thing by naming LTTE as the most brutal terrorist group in the world which they would have been done one decade earlier.

ltte issue by truthsayer on 18 Jan 2008

lankan tamils know very well that they can't get a seperate state.they are supporting the tigers because they are trying to join that piece of land with india by pressuring india i.e if india fails to join NE srilanka india would split because of inspiration from tamileealm to tamilnadu tamils.if tamileelam is acheived india should join that with india or face separation. other than that lankan tamils know very well that tamil eelam can't run without resources.this is their gameplan.

Peace man Peace by Sanjay on 12 Jan 2008

India should demand Un or Indian monitored peace force to protect the minority and bring peace to Sri Lanka. I feel it is too bad that ethnic clensing is going on. Why is that Hindus throught the world are being genocided.About Rajiv Gandhi he should have been there for peace not enthnic cleansing.

India must support the amil cause by Bharat on 11 Jan 2008

We the Bharatiya must support the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka. US have no business to call all LTTE as terrorist organization, as their actions confined inside Sri Lanka. Moreover, why not US, the human right master of the world, look into the plights of millions of Sri Lankan Tamils? Why Tamils are only refugees, why not Simhalese? India must stop supplying arms to Sri Lanka to kill Tamils, and tell the Sri Lankan govt that ethnic cleansing of Tamils will not be tolerated. Kashmiri Hindus are ethnically cleansed from J

Go India... by BJP Guy on 12 Jan 2008

I can tell by this post alone that you are a Hindu BJP fanatic. This is pathetic. Get you facts right, India suplies arms to srilanka not the US. Also, why do you hate everyone that is not your kind? try to judge people by their actions rather than religion or language. So what if they are tamils and yes they are suffering but that doesn't mean we should support terrorists. we have to do something about the tamil cause but we must not support the morons of LTTE who killed our PM and our soldiers. Because of narrowminded people like you, India is still suffering from poverty and crime. Why don't just go to your back yard, find a rock, tie a cloth around it and pray to it instead of spreading stupidity.

Judge only by Actions... by Tamil Guy on 11 Jan 2008

I agree with most of the posts here. They are fighting for Tamils and that USA ALWAYS uses double standards. They accuse someone of doing something but they do it all the time. Anyway, to get to the point. The LTTE are fighting for the tamils but the method is not right. They kill civillians and kidnap people all of which makes them terrorists. Anyone who kills an innocent person to make a point is a terrorist. Also I have learned that lot of people support them in India just because they are Tamils which is spoken in India. That is not right, you cannot support someone for what they are. It cannot be by color, cast, religion, or language. You have to judge them by their actions. Remmember they killed our prime minister as well as many soldiers. I understand the struggle but what they are doing right now is barbaric so they have to be destroyed. Maybe someone will bomb both the LTTE and the Lankan forces to stop this madness.

they fight for the rights of tamils by mano fernando on 11 Jan 2008

LTTE is fight for the equal right for their people in their own land. US should know what made LTTE to lift arm. And to be frank if LTTE is not there by this time Sinhalese army would slained all the tamils living in sri lanka.

Give Autonomy for Tamil Elam by VS Paulraj on 11 Jan 2008

LTTE is fighting for equal rights for tamil people (in their home lands) which is denied not only by srilankan govt. also by international community except norway. Rating the militancy groups is easy job. Instead the international community should pressurise the srilankan govt. to negotiate with LTTE for improving the situation. Like Norway, how many are really interested in Srilankan issue. India keeping mouth shut is unfortunate of Srilankan Tamils.

Prabhaharan wants POWER by Tamilan on 11 Jan 2008

Explain one thing to me please. How can a piece of land that cannot support one country could support Two countries? Srilianka it self cannot improve because of limited resources and poverty, how can another very similar country that is even more povery driven survive. I say no new countries please. We are at the point where we have to start to unite counties to form a single unit. That is the only way we can survive. Our world resources will run out in a 100 years and then what? no more new countries please. Just give them a state which is governed by Srilanka and watched by the UN. or just give that piece of land to India. Samthign with kashmir, just give it to the pakitanis and let them know that since the issue is solved, if they ever sent anymore terrorists through then all of pakistan will suffer. Bottom line is that, the lankan tamils cannot have a separate country. You think prabaharan wants to end this war? no, he wants to continue this was untill he gets a separate counrty so he can be his own king. that is what he wants, power. he doesn't care about tamil lives, if he did then the war would be long gone. Prabaharan will continue it untill HE gets what he wants.

Use of churches by terrorist outfit of LTTE by I. N. S. Hallah on 11 Jan 2008

LTTE has used churches in the USA to raise funds. The attack on Indian leaders can hence be viewed by a terrorist act of crusade by Churches, to the extent that now they are building churches all over India to attack civilian and unarmed population of India. This, in their ugly terminology, is called "planting" churches and "harvesting" the souls of non beleivers. It is encouraging that FBI realises the danger this homegrown terrorist ideology poses.
