The process to elect SAD delegates, who further elect the SAD president, was completed in 20 minutes flat, as the rights to nominate them were given to SAD president and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Former minister Gurdev Singh Badal was coordinator for the meeting.
As per the democratic set-up, delegates should be elected and not nominated. Notably, about 30 delegates were to be elected from Jalandhar, who would be participating in the election of the SAD president on January 31. The election process was conducted at Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Model Town. Earlier, two separate election meetings were to be convened today at 11 am and 12:30 pm for the urban and rural district units, respectively. But later, a collective meeting was held after 11.40 am, and the entire election process ended in 20 minutes.
Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar and rural district unit president, addressing the SAD members, said like other districts, they should also give the authority to nominate delegates to the Punjab CM. Their views were seconded by urban district unit president Gurcharan Singh Channi.
However, their idea got a cold response.
Later, MLA Jagbir Singh Brar from Jalandhar Cantonment asked the district delegates to raise their arms to support the proposal of Kohar and Channi. The members abided by and the meeting ended.
However, SAD leader Kuldeep Singh Wadala said workers at the grassroots level should be given a fair chance in such elections. Various members of the rural unit were not happy over the move and said that it was against the democratic set-up of the party.
