Takhtupura, (Moga), January 14 With sights set on coming Parliamentary elections, political parties upped their ante as their leaders traded charges from their respective stages at the Maghi Mela held at this sleepy village today. Amid all this, thousands of people braving the chill converged at the village to a take a dip in the holy tank.

Repeating his promise of making Punjab a power-surplus state, Sukhbir Badal, working president of SAD (Badal) said that “Faridkot constituency would have 29 power grids set up at the cost of Rs 200 crore and out of these 29 grids, 15 would be in Moga alone.”

These grids, as per Junior Badal, would help resolve the power crisis of the area, especially that of the villages.

Sukhbir also laid stress on the developmental plan for the state saying that, “The state would spend Rs 3,300 crores for rejuvenating the canal system of Punjab.”

The stage set up by the Congress saw both their main leaders, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh giving the meet a skip. Though Bhattal had attended the Muktsar Maghi Mela, Amarinder has missed both the melas.

The Congress stage was handled by Congress Working Committee member Jagmeet Brar and former MLA Mohinder Singh Kaypee. Both the leaders labelled the present Akali regime as “the root cause of all the woes being faced by the state presently.” Addressing the gathering, Brar thundered, “Badal (CM) knows that his party will be defeated in the sarpanch elections and hence he is not letting these elections to be held. If Badal does not relent soon, I will offer my arrest at Badal’s own village.” Brar also accused the SAD government of implicating the Congressmen in false cases.

Meanwhile, SAD (A) president Simranjeet Singh Mann while coming down heavily on Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, said, “If he (Badal) is true to his Panth, he should immediately sack people like SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, Daljit Singh Bedi, Bibi Jagir Kaur and Manoranjan Kalia. We have CDs showing these people in shameful activities and in case, Badal does not relent we will hand over these CDs to the people and let them decide.”

The CPI stage attracted a meagre crowd. This stage was addressed by CPI leader Jagroop Singh Gill. At another stage, Lok Bhalai Party Chief Balwant Singh Ramoowalia urged the Punjabis to give the third front a chance as both Congress and Akalis have failed the people of this state.
