New Delhi, January 1 Sahmat, a trust formed after the demise of Safdar Hashmi, a pioneer of nukkad natak (street theatre) on January 1, 1989, completed 20 years of its inception today.

The trust, which is a platform for actors, academics, writers, painters and poets, was buzzing with activities today as a memorial function commemorated Hashmi and the formation of Sahmat.

The function started with a street play titled Zang-e Azadi, performed by actors from Haryana under the banner Haryana Gyan Vigyan Samity and Jana Natya Manch. It showcased the nation’s struggle for Independence.

A Flamenco dance by Judith Martinez and Christopher Peres on the guitar stole the show with a beautiful blend of traditional Arabic and Rajasthani music. Sumangala Damodaran and Deepak Castelino rendered some of the famous IPTA songs in Hindi, Bengali, Urdu and Telengana.

As a part of the programme, Kathak exponent Aditi Mangaldas released a CD of tribal songs composed by Vidya Shah. Presentations on the life and works of painters Sunil Jana, Chittoprasad Bhattacharya and M F Hussain were also a part of the event.

Tanveer Ahmad Khan and Imran Ahmad Khan of the Delhi Gharana rendered Amir Khusro’s Kalam. A painting exhibition was also held at the Vithal Bhai Patel House lawns. Those present at the occasion included Vivan Sundaram, Dr Sabyasachi Bhattcharya (Former V-C of Vishwa Bharti University), M K Raina and CPM leader Sitaram Yechuri, among others.
