Chandigarh, March 8 International Women's Day was celebrated in various ways in different parts of the city today.

Women and AIDS awareness
International Women's Day was today observed by the State AIDS Control Society, Chandigarh, which used the occasion to sensitize and address the issue of feminization of HIV/ AIDS pandemic. In order to promote health seeking behaviour among women the State AIDS Control Society here organized various activities including putting up a Mega Health Mela, at the ESI Dispensary, sector 29, Chandigarh to educate women on safety in sexual practices and to disseminate the messages regarding HIV/ AIDS awareness. More than 1000 women and children visited the stall. An awareness camp was also organized at the Central Industrial Security Force unit posted at the Punjab & Haryana Civil Secretariat.

Farewell Party
As a tribute to womanhood on International Women's Day, the second year students of Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45 organised a farewell party for their seniors. The tempo of the function was set by a dance 'Aaj Mein Upar Aasma Niche' by Sanskriti of B.Com second years showcasing the different roles played by women, their desires and their aspirations.
A Punjabi fusion sequence by BA II students made the audience swing to their beats. The team also presented a comedy skit, which portrayed a triangular love story. An Indo-Western fusion sequence 'Dream Voyage' was presented by students of BCA II. Games were also organized for the seniors.
Principal, Dr Meera Modi wished luck to the outgoing students and success in all their future endeavours.

Blood donation camp
Students of Swami Vivekanand Group of Institutes (SVGOI) celebrated 'International Women's Day' by organizing a blood donation camp today. The daylong function also witnessed a host of cultural activities and competitions, giving students a platform to showcase their talent and creativity, like Rangoli, Slogan Writing, Face-Painting, On-the-spot Painting, Debate, Salad Decoration and Mehandi.
Suman Rani Bansal, Managing Director, Punjab State Co-operative Handloom Federation Ltd, Neena Singh, Ex. Senior Vice President, HDFC Bank and present head of an NGO, Dr. Kusum Mahajan, Professor, Department of Paediatrics, Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Ramnagar, Dr. Kanwaljit Chopra, Reader, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, PU, Sunita Rani, DSP, Traffic Police, Patiala, and Swapana Bhattacharya, Chief Manager, State Bank of Patiala were the Guests of Honour for the 'International Women's Day' function.
The blood donation camp was organized by 'Let us Give'— a society formed by the NSS wing of the college in collaboration with a team of doctors and technicians led by Dr. Subita Basu from Government Medical College, Sector 32.

CandleLight vigil
A candle light vigil was organised by Youth United at Sukhna Lake today to create awareness about female foeticide, infanticide and girl child education. ASP Madhur Verma and few women counsellors of the Municipal Corporation led the procession.
Saloni Bajaj, a spokesperson for the group, said that despite strict laws being implemented by the government for banning sex determination tests, the problem still persists. The trend is stronger in urban areas than rural areas. People were made aware of this fact and explained how they could help in preventing it. An appeal was made to the people to be generous and donate for this cause.

'Meet and Greet'
BIG 92.7 FM organized a 'Big City Kitty' on the occasion of women's day. The party was a platform for all the women to have a 'Meet and Greet' session with the radio jockeys of the station.
The women bagged awards for being the Most Talented female, Best Dressed Female and Ms Beautiful Hair.
Games like Antakshari and talent hunt were organised. Big FM RJs Meenakshi, Pankaj, Arsh, Anubhav and Sachin played a number of games with the women of city beautiful.
Every woman was given a chance to perform in front of the audience. The programming team of the station announced the results of the Talent Hunt contest at the end of the evening.

MARKET WATCH
The Citizens Awareness Group held an awareness workshop in collaboration with Ludhiana Stock Exchange (LSE) on the occasion of Women's day in Chandigarh today. The workshop was held under the aegis of the Securities Market Awareness campaign. Pooja Kohli, executive director of the LSE briefed women on the capital market and the role of SEBI in safeguarding the interests of investors.
