New Delhi The Supreme Court refused to restrain the Uttar Pradesh government from carrying out work for installation of statues of Chief Minister Mayawati and other Dalit leaders at a park in Noida.

The apex Court said it cannot interfere in the matter in which the approval has been granted by the state Cabinet. "If it has been approved by the government, this court cannot interfere," a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said, when an application seeking to maintain the status quo on the works was mentioned before it.

"If the cabinet has approved it, then we can't do anything," the Bench said.

The Uttar Pradesh government had proposed to install statues of several BSP leaders including that of Mayawati and party founder Kanshi Ram in the gigantic 4-km long walled area along the bank of river Yamuna in Noida.

Where are the peoples right? by DR.SWARAJ (DEMOCRACY) CHOR on 10 Jul 2009

This decision may mean that state politicians could pass laws to pay all subsidies to themselves and no one could take them to task. This is openly chorbazari and the tax payers are being openly looted by rouge politicians.

Statue by pankaj on 10 Jul 2009

Hi to all, Because person become immortal because of his/her work but not because of dead statues,So BSP's supremo should keep this thing in her mind while doing such acts.We should not compare BSP govt. with other govts such as congress or DMK because if sombody has done anything wrong in the past should not be copied by the others as people are saying in the case of BSP. BSP is no doubt doing the wrong things.

Indian Democracy - A Bannana Replublic? by MVC on 10 Jul 2009

It's highly debatable that India is a real democracy or just another banana republic! Why the hell there was no accountability for Mayawathi spending? Many gentlemen wrote about same Mayawathi as Indian Obama/Potential PM/Powerful politician.I am afraid all of them are wrong and no fool will spend 1000 crores on statues whether her own beautiful busts or her god father B R Ambedkar.I hope that Indian media realizes that one has to spend money public money prudently on useful thing, not like Maya nor like Laloo! It's time for public to intervene in this matter, else public will take care of them sooner or later.

Statues>>Statues>>Statues.. by Muralidharan on 10 Jul 2009

The Statue culture was started in India by The Congress and the D.M.K party in Tamil Nadu in the 70s a statue of Mr Karunanidhi was erected in Mount road chennai by the D.M.K party with his blessings when he was in power in T.N that statue was totally destroyed when Mr M.G.R died in 1987 though Karunanidhi came back to power in 1989 and again in 1996 he didnt dare to erect a statue for the fear of losing power. Mayawathi now has also done the mistake of putting up her statue when she is in power the count down for her fall has started and in no time you will see her losing her C.M post for which any way she is not fit hope it happens fast so that the people of Uttar Pradesh will get relief from her and her partys atrocities >>>>Congress is the other culprit in this statue culture dont be surprised if a statue of Sonia ,Rahul or Priyanka comes up in your city or town in the immediate future>>>????

MAYAVATI AND SUPREME COURT by KRISHNAN.S on 10 Jul 2009

The Supreme Court is right. It cannot interfere in the legislative powers of the State. That is why we should elect the right persons. But people like Mayawati are elected by those who cannot understand governance in this country. What is the remedy?

What have we Come to. by ketan on 10 Jul 2009

Simply ridiculous. does the Judiciary have a say over the Cabinet's decision? And where's the people sense. I can udnerstand if Behenji wants to make a school and name it afterher 'holier than thou' self, but statues? I hope all the birds in the world find it a suitable place to attend nature's call. Bloody non sense.

Where are we heading ? by Ameet on 10 Jul 2009

Does it means that if the Cabinet approves that all the money in the treasurery is to be distributed on the road side, it will be allowed? This ruling will give the currupt polititions the right to do what they want and will lead to anarchy. It is extremely disturbing to read this order. Hope some one will appeal.Only God can now save us. We thought earlier that the judiciary could save us.

Re: Dinesh by Avinash Baranwal on 10 Jul 2009

Mr. Dinesh.I can't say you are wrong. But when you speak only against Mayawati -> They you are wrong. Mayawati is installing statues of leaders, for making them immortal and for political gain.If you remain unbiased, you will notice, congress has done the same, albiet in a different(and ofcourse without spending a single buck) way. They named insititutions like JNU, IGNOU, Jawahar Rojgar Yojana, Rajiv Gandhi's name is also involved...coins were minted in their honour. So, what is so wrong with Mayawati then? Certainly, it is a misuse of public money, but then for that so much condemnation of mayawati is TOTALLY unfair.

Dragging feet by Vinay on 10 Jul 2009

SC is also dragging feets from it's responsibility. It has interfered almost always in all the PIL cases against govt's cabinet decisions - take the case of CNG, Industries in Delhi's residential areas, withdrawal of criminal cases, Gujarat Riots, etc. What are the options available to the law abiding citizen of the country (in this case UP) if the govt decides on doing wrong things. If the mandate of the govt is to do good of the citizens. If the responsibility of Courts is to decide what legal

Shocking.... by Dinesh on 10 Jul 2009

I think the judiciary has also started treading the same path which our corrupt leaders use to....Its shocking that our Supreme Court has shown its inability to interefere in the clear loot of poor people's money...After this shocking decision, perhaps people like Mayawati will start making temples of their own taking the plea that nothing is being incurred from public funds...Except Ambedkar, what Kanshi Ram or Mayawati have done so special for the country or for that matter for the Dalits....Why cannot this money be spent on poor people...
