SDP College holds annual athletic meet

Ludhiana, February 2 SDP College for Women wore a festive look when its 39th annual athletic meet was held at the college ground today, amidst the mood of fervour and gaiety.

The campus playground was richly decorated with multi-coloured banners, flags, buntings and painted pots. Mohinder Pal, Deputy Director, Local government-cum- Administrator, Improvement Trust, Ludhiana, was the chief guest for the meet.

The meet was declared open by Balraj Bhasin, President, SDP College and Sabha, in the inaugural session of the function. The chief guests were a accorded hearty welcome by Principal Dr Geeta Bhandari, Director S Verma, staff and students.

Dr Bhandari highlighted the achievements of the college in various fields. The chief guest for the morning session, Balraj Bhasin, unfurled the college flag, took salute from the spectacular marchpast contingents, lighted the torch and released pigeons and balloons.

Nidhi Chandla, the best athlete of session 2006-07 and an outstanding player of the college, administrated the oath ceremony on behalf of other players and participants.

More than 750 students presented the PT Show, calisthenics, hoops and ribbon exercises and aerobic exercises, to music. The students actively participated in events like 50 meters race, 100, 20 and 400 meters race, chatti race, potato race, slow cycling, three-legged race, sack race, fun race/obstacle race etc.

Nidhi Chandla of BA III and Baljit Kaur of MA I were adjudged the Best Athlete and Best Player of the session 2007-08. Mohinder Pal, Balraj Bhasin, Principal Dr Bhandari, Director S Verma and members of the management honoured the players and winners of various events, with certificates and prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said that the government should take steps to promote sports and games in schools and colleges. On the occasion, the students regaled the audience with the folk dance, ‘Sammi’.
