SEASONS’ GREETINGs

It may be one of the best hotel brands of the world, but the Four Seasons, opening in Mumbai on March 1, can hardly escape the squalor the city is sometimes loved for. Ironically, to get to one of the world’s finest hotel chains, one has to ask the taxi driver for Worli Hindu Shamshaan Ghat, which stands opposite the spectacular marvel of glass and stone.

Although the great boundary wall shuts out the day-time din and clamour of Worli, the management feels that the location of the hotel is its greatest USP. Luisa Lencastre, director of public relations, says, “We are proud of the location. It doesn’t matter if there is a slum nearby. The Mahalaxmi Race Course is close and so is the Worli Sea Face. Besides, Worli is fast becoming the hub of business activity with so many offices setting up shop here.”

Within the premises, the buzz is phenomenal. The local staff has mastered firang accents beautifully. They look dapper in their starched uniforms, and in the run to the finish, take instructions willingly from supervisors. At Four Seasons, employees are treated well. “In the staff canteen, we guys eat sushi. We also get free stays at hotel properties across the globe,” says Lencastre, as we get into a gorgeous burnt-yellow onyx-lined lift.

The lobby, with exclusive Anegre wood panelling is, paradoxically, quite spartan and comprises a reception counter and just four chairs. “Our lobbies are primarily for concierge services. We don’t like our guests to remain in the lobby. We’d rather that they lounge in the lobby bar,” she explains, saying that the lobby funnels out into a chic bar. Rooms are luxurious in a conventional sort of a way. The bathrooms, however, are the best that Mumbai has seen; one can watch the sun set, as far as Colaba, from the bathtub on the 26th floor.

The hotel also sells its beds, in a literal sort of way. They use fluffy beds from Sealy, and if you like them, then you can order one from the premises itself.

It also houses its Asian restaurant, San Qi, in a different two-storey wing. The modern design of the swish eatery is stunning, to say the least. There is a frou-frou spa and a cute children’s wing too, but it isn’t ready yet. The hotel claims ownership of Asia’s largest BMW fleet, Christy Turlington’s Sundari products, a Metodo Rossano Ferretti hair salon and an in-house yoga guru for a quick spiritual fix.

A pre-launch inspection helps us understand what the Four Seasons hospitality is about. However, the petty shopkeepers, who unknowingly share the boundary wall with one of the best hotels of the world, can’t seem to understand what the fuss is all about.
