Gurgaon, July 4 Protests against the Reliance Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project near Gurgaon city had the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway jammed for well over three hours on Friday morning. The jam was seen on both sides of the 24-km toll plaza.

The protests were led by Janhit Congress (BS) president Kuldeep Bishnoi, who gathered villagers at the toll plaza around 7.30 am, taking the Expressway authorities by surprise.

The peak-hour traffic in the morning got stuck right from 8 am, and the situation became completely normal only after noon.

Bishnoi, son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, tried to lead the protestors on foot to the SEZ site, in Hasru village near Gurgaon. But the police foiled the protestors’ plans by “removing, not arresting” them.

There was a brief clash between the police and the demonstrators when the police used the cane on the protestors and tried to remove them by force in front of Ambience Mall, next to the toll plaza.

According to a spokesperson of DS Constructions, in charge of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, the police closed all tag and cash lanes leading to Gurgaon on the Expressway at 7.30 am. The police barricaded the road both leading on to and after the toll plaza; they also sealed all entry and exit routes to the Expressway to stop the demonstrators from crossing the border.
