Fatehgarh Sahib, March 19 At the executive committee meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) held at Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib last evening, members condemned the arrest of Parveen in the Dera Sacha Sauda case and claimed that she was innocent.

SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said, "She is an orphan and a student. She should be let off." Assuring all possible help to the girl, Makkar said the Punjab government would also be apprised of the issue. "Role of the Haryana Police and the government is condemnable as they have not done their homework properly before arresting an innocent girl," he said.

Meanwhile, the committee also decided to ask the Indian Home Ministry not to lodge "Gursikh students in hostel rooms where tobacco and cigarettes were consumed". The executive committee passed a resolution to give Rs 1 lakh to the family of an SGPC employee in Kanpur, whose son was found dead on railway tracks. "The boy, Arjun Singh, a Gursikh, had gone to study engineering in Beedar in Karnataka. We came to know that he was actually murdered and some of his roommates were involved in it as he had opposed to their smoking and drinking habits," alleged Makkar.

"We will write to the Home Minister to ensure that religious sentiments of Sikhs are respected," he added.

The SGPC has also appealed to the Pakistan government to free Sarabjit Singh and urged the Indian government to release Devinder Singh Bhullar, who has been sentenced to death. The religious body has decided to spend Rs 80 lakh on rest house in the memory of Bhai Joga Singh in Hazoor Sahib and take steps to modernise Golden Offset Press of the SGPC.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, member Karnail Singh Panjoli said when the issue of Rs 4 crore to Sri Guru Ram Dass College, Amritsar, was raised, he opposed it. He added that then the SGPC president told the executive that Rs 4 crore were diverted to the college from SGPC funds for increasing seats, which would ultimately favour the Sikh community.
