Amritsar, January 23 Pakistan is ready with separate Sikh marriage ordinance, which the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has not only hailed, but also demanded a similar law in India. It would enable Sikhs to register their marriages as per ‘Anand Karaj’. Sources in the SGPC said Pakistan was going to announce the new law shortly and if an Islamic country could go ahead with it then why not India.

SGPC chief Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar said they got information that Pakistan’s Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Syed Afzal Haider would soon announce the new law.

Haider had made the announcement regarding the proposed law during the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan two months ago. There were reports that Pakistan’s federal cabinet that met on Tuesday had approved the ordinance unanimously and under the law, any Sikh couple from any part of the world could come to Pakistan to solemnise their marriage.

Makkar said they wanted that the Indian government should also move in this direction and the community’s grievances related to solemnising marriages, divorce, custody of children and maintenance should be addressed.

Akal Takht Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti and American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee convener Pritpal Singh also hailed the decision. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee head Paramjit Singh Sarna said they were planning to honour Pakistan’s law minister for the gesture.
