Police sub-inspector Ashok Temkar, attached to the Matunga police station and posted at a chowky near the Matunga railway station, was arrested on Tuesday night. The police have also arrested five others four of who have have been identified by the police — kingpin Azhar Siddiqui alias Ajju, Nagpada resident Salim Sayyad, Sajid Khan and Mohsin Sheikh — in the case.
According to Prashant Burde, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) of the Thane police, the complainant, a homosexual, came across an Internet profile posted by Azhar Siddiqui last November. They agreed to meet near Swaminarayan temple at Dadar, from where they headed to Five Gardens near Matunga.
As per the plan, Sajid and Mohsin, posing as Crime Branch sleuths, intercepted the duo and took them to the Matunga police chowky being manned by Temkar. There, Mohsin and Sajid demanded money from them and threatened to charge the victim for homosexual activities which they said were forbidden by law. The victim paid up Rs 19,000 that he withdrew from an ATM that day.
“But they continued to pester him for more money and threatened to implicate him in a false narcotic case if he did not pay up. The the victim then paid Rs 1.5 lakh,” said Sanjay Shintre, DCP (Crime Branch).
“The police sub inspector had knowledge about this case and even got money from these people, so we have arrested him as well,” added Burde.
But the victim finally mustered courage to register a case and subsequently a case was registered at the Naupada police station on July 6. All six have been booked for extortion.
