Gandhinagar The SIT on Tuesday began probing the role, if any, of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 62 others in the 2002 riots in Gujarat which officially left 1,180 dead.

The Supreme Court’s order to the SIT followed a complaint filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was among those killed in the Gulbarg Society massacre during the riots. Besides seeking a probe into the role of the 63 persons, Zakia had also raised several other questions.

“We began the inquiry today into Zakia Jafri’s petition by calling the petitioner herself to our office in Gandhinagar. We had a long interaction with her, and she narrated the allegations she made in her petition,” said SIT chief and former CBI Director R K Raghavan.

During her half-an-hour interaction, Zakia mainly focused on a meeting of February 27, 2002 where she alleged Chief Minister Narendra Modi had directed the police “to remain silent and allow Hindus to vent their anger”. The meeting called by the CM to review the law and order situation arising out of the torching of Sabarmati Express at Godhra was attended by some ministers, the then ACS (Home) Ashok Narayan and DGP K Chakravarti.

“I have requested the SIT to thoroughly probe the role of Modi and other 62 persons in the post-Godhra riots. The SIT chief has assured me that his team will inquire into all the questions raised in the petition filed in the Supreme Court,” Zakia said later.

Teesta Setalvad of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) and Zakia’s son Tanvir were also present during the interaction. A co-petitioner, Teesta said she had also requested the SIT to take note of the late BJP leader Haren Pandya’s statement before the Concerned People’s Tribunal, headed by Justice Krishna Aiyar, on what transpired at the February 27 meeting.

Shame on the Express for printing this crap and passing it as a journalism by Shocked Citizen on 17 Jun 2009

Wait a minute!!!! Hold EVERYTHING... Teesta Seetalvad was there ALONG with Zakia????? All this, after we get to know from SIT itself that she BLATANTLY lied to the investigation team about almost every incident she narrated to them inlcuding the much narrated 'stabbing of the foetus' incident AND the fact that they forced everyone to file FALSE affidavits!?!?!?!?!?! WAKE THE F*%@# UP Indian media!! She has ALREADY filed false...(NOT INACCURATE)... but FALSE affidavits before. And now we are taking her word along with Zakia's? Surely Zakia knows what happened more than a month ago when the SIT declared Teesta's allegations as false but she STILL chose to bring her along? BS! Mrs. Jafri.. There is little doubt left in our minds after this act of cowardice by you that your husband was not killed on anyone's orders. SHAME. ON. YOU.

Hidutwa - Sikhism by jaanpillai on 02 Jun 2009

It is a biggest surprise that, why there is no voilence between hindutwa's sung pariwar people and sikh people? Although there are many reasons, the primary reason for BJP, RSS and sung pariwar is Dr. ManmohanSingh is being the Prime Minister of India again. Then, why not they satat any violence or even 'participate' in recent violence in punjab, haryana, himachal and delhi? The reason for it is (may not be new for hindutwa people, bur new to others).........................."there is no MODI" .....and......"there is no thackereys" ............in those states.

Riots In Gujarat A Routine Affair by chaulakuruwa on 29 May 2009

Riots in Gujarat are not new.Every time when Rathyatra starts and pass through muslim area of Dariyapur kalupur it starts rioting and days to gether people have to face curfew and tension etc.The worst riots are known in 1969 when congress was in power. than 1973, 75,1980-85 and specially 1985 Gujarat has seen worst ever riots after 1969. Again in 1992-etc.Its very interesting to study the history of riots in Gujarat. this was the same like previous one for many of us. Who hardly remember 2002 riots after several years. In Gujarat curfew, bandh are routine matter during this time many of us who stay this side of river prefer to stay at home and relax. For me riots of 2002 are nothing but the repetation of previous yearsAfter five months long riots in 1985 the geogrophy of Ahmedabad city is totally changed. People have shifted to peaceful areas like Juhapura-muslim

Modi by Anant on 28 May 2009

Modi is history. Why bother. He is not known or wanted outside Gujarat. Leave him to Gujarati vices. He is a waste of time. No one outside Gujarat wanted to listen to him and his presence was enough for BJP to lose elections.

For Chacko and Company by rohit on 28 May 2009

Torching of a train full of innocent people is the crime and the rest is aftereffect. If Narendra Modi discharged his duties in accordance with rajdharma, under the constraints of our system, then no one can destroy him and god will protect him.Let it be decided once and for all even if it means creation of another land for minorities so minorities live in peace.Buying religion of poor people on might of money and making them deplore hinduism is the only act missionaries do.

SIT begins probing Modi role by N.V.SANKARAN on 28 May 2009

When IPL decided to move out of India because the government said it cannot provide adequate security, Mr. Modi said it was a national shame. There was nothing communal in Mr. Modi's statement. The home minister, in reply said that it was the Gujarat riots was the national shame(of course, for the congress, 1984 anti-Sikh riots perpetrated by their supporters was no shame at all. The HM also said that when the SIT investigation was complete, it would show the ineptitude of the Gujarat government in containing the riots. Two days later, one of Modi's cabinet ministers, Ms. Maya Kodnani's bail application was rejected by the Gujarat HC. Barely one week later, this too just before the elections in Gujarat, based on Mrs. Jafri's petition at Teesta's prodding, the SC orders a fresh probe into Modi's involvement in the Gujarat riots. The minister was given bail 2 day after the election results were declared. These are just facts.

so called NGO's by mike on 28 May 2009

We need to probe the role of so called NGO's that are coming up at every corner of the street to collect the fund being provided by government and being donated by citizens of india with good faith. There are 100s of riot happened in the county till the date and none other than Godhara is being remembered since it started by killing hindus and ended with Muslims. Riots are wrong in any reason when innocent people gets killed but let people to move on to their lives and all try not to provocate anyone which leeds to riots.

Prof by NAIDOO on 27 May 2009

Modi is being tried by Congress, Christians and Muslims. The essential reasons being is that he represents the indigneous systems of India. The main intention of all Muslims and Chrsitians is to make India's indigneous people or Hindus into a population of colonised people. Modi represent a reistance of this challenge.

SIT begins probing Modi Role, first call to Jafris by Kissooya Romeefeetal on 27 May 2009

Jai Ho Poplya Bendefunct. One has to agree with him/her.The hour of the need though is to despatch Teesta Setalvad urgently to Swat. The human rights of the Taliban are being eroded by the Pak Army there. The Secular and not so secular Muslims will survive in India without her. No doubt, the Hindus will miss Antonia-Raul-Priyanna Maino-Vincy but darling Quatrochhi needs them in Italy. After recovering the stolen money from the Swiss banks, we should let them go with Ahmed and Sushil Kumar Scindia of Solapur slums. Sukanya and her family will be deprived of justice but a generous proportion of raul Vincy's crores could be utilised with Manu Abhishek Singhvi's permission for Sukanya's rehabilitation.

Biased media and corrupt congress and judiciary by Prasad on 27 May 2009

It is a travesty of justice which is happening in Gujarat at the behest of Teesta, Jaffry widow and the congress and the so called secular media. The Nanavati commission which is appointed by the supre court itself has given a clean chit to Modi in Dec 2008. Now how come Supreme court is once again trying to probe the role of Modi after one of its own appointed commission has given him a clean chit ? The fact of the matter is that in India a handful of NGO's, like Teesta, almost all of the english media with tacit support from the congress feel that as long as Modi is not punished because they want him to be punished, then justice is really not done. Let the law go to hell. All these agencies keep on petioning the supreme court with false affadavits (like in case of Teesta Settlevad with 22 false affadavits before SIT) and keepon pressurising the judiciary which, then surprisingly goes back on its own earlier stand and restarts investigation all over again. Plain ridiculous.

role of Narendra Modi by attukadavil Joseph chacko on 27 May 2009

There is no mistake in probing the involvement of Narendra Modi. If proven guilty should be punished. The persons holding constitutional office should be impartial. Let law of the land may take its course. One thing I want to highlight is the another Moditva experiment conducted in Khandamahal Orissa where hundreds of Christians were killed and their homes were destroyed, but the Experiment failed miserably BJP could not win a single Lok Sabha seat in Orissa. The curse of Indian politics is we have drastically failed to give a new and developed direction to Indian Politics. So long as we are chained to caste and religious hatred, and class hatred politics, we will never acheive the perfection of our hard earned freedom and Democracy as its beauty emnates from mutualy helping loving caring highly developed India where there will multi religious people co-exist without disparities or poverty equaly sharing her wealth.Chacko, Mumbai

There were riots even prior to Modi government - many "innocent (Muslims

Modi by Suchithra on 27 May 2009

Media exaggerates about Godhra riots and poses him as a communal leader - well, let media also know that Modi administration has demolished 80 hindu temples in Gujarat's capital. I repeat - 80 hindu temples in Gandhinagar - Media, - now Modi must be really a devil for Hindus - right?? You may call Teesta Setalvad. It was during his headship Gujarat registered the highest growth rate among all the states in India with a GDP growth rate of over 10%- Narendra Modi was credited by the Gujarat Government for reducing the fiscal deficiency of the state treasury by 50%- He was credited for reducing the losses of the Gujarat State Electricity Board.- Height of the Narmada Dam from 95 to 110.64 metres accomplishments of his government resulted into increased irrigation, water supplies and hydroelectric power. Media - what do you conclude of these points?. Please feel free to cross verify these statements.

Indias tragedy is that for every 1 pritviraj Chauhan we have 100 Jaichands, for every 1 Sardar patel we have 100 nehrus, for every 1 modi we have 100 laloo's, mainos, mulayams, mayawatis, thugs n terrorists like teesta setelvad. Modi is the need of the hour rather than MMS and his boss the Italiano Maino, who is hell bent on christianising this nation.

What parallels are sought to be drawn between the Sikh riots and the Gujarat Carnage? Tatyler a prime accused in Sikh roits was freed before elections.Congress never regretted for Sikh Roits.Rajiv Gandhi Justified Sikh Roits Openly. Why Modi has to accpet for Guj Roits when he hasnt been part of it.Police was silent spectator in Delhi riots whereas Gujarat police fired thousands of bullets to control riots claiming almost equal lives from both the communities. Army was called out on the first day of Guj riots where as Rajiv Gandhi justified Delhi riots by saying that the earth shakes when big tree falls.

Suchitra, change your name to Kuchitra by Seema Zafar on 27 May 2009

Killing innocents is a crime against humanity. Modi is a criminal and must face justice. Justifying genocide is criminal. Criminals, murderers deserve to go to gallows. Modi belongs behind bars and must be hanged to death.

Seema Zafar by N.V.SANKARAN on 27 May 2009

If you have enough evidence, except the hate-Modi propaganda by a committed(to the ruling family of independent India) media, why don't you file a PIL with the help of the likes of Teesta Setalvaad or even better, give the evidence to the SIT? Why don't you wait till the SIT investigations are over and the courts pronounces the verdict before making such statements? Can you list the available proof on which you say that Modi was responsible for the riots?

No parallels exist by Ronald D'Souza on 27 May 2009

Time and again parallels are sought to be drawn between the Sikh riots and the Gujarat Carnage. Two Congress heavy weights who were 'suspect' in the Sikh riots were stood down during the last elections from the Delhi area. On the other hand Modi and the BJP are still wearing the blood of hundreds like a badge and by actually playing to their constituencies are trying to garner votes. THIS is the main difference why the Congress won and the BJP lost so badly and they are still not learning the lesson.

No parallels exist by N.V.SANKARAN on 27 May 2009

It was not because of Congress party wanted not to field Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, but because they were forced by the Sikh protests to CBI clearing them. Before, that they were the candidates for those constituencies even though they were the prime accused even at that time.

White Papaer On Riots in Gujarat Since 1947 by Anil Gupta on 27 May 2009

Sir, Gujarat has had a long history of communal disturbances. Gujarat Govt. should publish awhite paper on communal riots in Gujarat giving full details of the persons killed communitywise, and the action that was taken by the then Govt of Gujarat.

A "Communal" Modi is a lot preferable to me as a PM when your secular alternative includes bafoons like Lalu.

Modi by Suchithra on 27 May 2009

People demand that Modi should be tried in international court. Why? Do they not have faith in Indian judiciary? The mob was sponsored by the then ruling party, the Congress. The Supreme Court has been sleeping over the 84 Pogrom since then. The sikhs were cut into pieces n burnt alive while their women were chased n raped. And all this happened in a matter of 72 hours. I remember seeing this picture on TV where the dead bodies were piled on to a truck; the pictures are extremely gruesome

PM MOdi by Suchithra on 27 May 2009

Modi came into prominence after he rebuilt the devasted Bhuj area after the earth quake. A predominantly muslim area took no dimension of religion in a no nonsense speed. There was no corruption and greediness. Compare it with the Bhopal case when Congress ruled the State. It was corruption synonimus and to date the sufferers have not got compensation and money has been got from abroad and digested by Congress politicians. The main victims were Muslims. So much for the guardians of Secularism Media - this is for you to publish - if you speak/write - say it in full.1. Which is the state where Muslims has highest per capita income?? - GUJARAT.2. Which is the state from where Muslims has paid highest tax?? - GUJARAT.3. Which is the state where Muslims has highest level of education?? - GUJARAT.There were riots even prior to Modi government - many "innocent (Muslims
