Vadodara, May 15 The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is investigating the 2002 riot cases afresh, has sought the help of the state Irrigation department to continue with the draining and dredging work at Ode village in Anand district.

R K Raghavan, who is heading the SIT, told The Indian Express that water is still coming out from the vav (step well) and they are yet to reach solid ground. “We have sought the help of the irrigation department to help us drain the vav. They are helping us and probably by tomorrow evening we will reach the ground level,” he said.

The SIT is carrying out dredging at two places, the Malav-Bhagol well and the Peerawali Bhagol in Ode village, besides draining out a step-well since the morning of May 13.

While dredging at the Malav-Bhagol well did not progress much as garbage is still being taken out, on Wednesday evening, the SIT recovered a few small pieces of bones from Peerawali Bhagol, a third place where dredging is now on.

But their origins have yet to be confirmed.

“On Wednesday, we found a few small pieces of charred bones and one of it resembles a finger, but it is too early to say anything before they can be confirmed by the Forensic Science Laboratory,” Raghavan said. He said SIT members, under the supervision of IG Shivanand Jha are preserving the work, but it is too soon to come out with any conclusion.

Sources present during the recovery of the bones said, “The police have sealed them and sent them for further tests at the FSL.”

On Thursday, SIT members, assisted by local authorities continued dredging work for the third consecutive day, in search of evidence in the vav (step well) and the well in the village. Twenty-seven people were killed and their bodies reportedly disposed of in the well.
