New Delhi Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt may now play a role in politics with Samajwadi Party today deciding to field him as its candidate from Lucknow in the Lok Sabha polls.

Bhojpuri sensation Manoj Tiwari would be SP's candidates from Gorakhpur.

The party took the decision in its central parliamentary board meeting held here.

SP general secretary Amar Singh announced the decision to field 26 other candidates, including party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, from Mainpuri.

Since Sanjay Dutt was convicted under the Arms Act, the SP would seek the permission of the Supreme Court, where the matter is pending, and the Election Commission to field him.

Apparently referring to BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, Singh said, "Like a BJP MP who is a known cricketer was allowed to contest despite being convicted, we too will try our best to field Dutt...if we fail, he would certainly be our star campaigner.

"Since we are an ally of Congress, and Dutt's sister Priya is a Congress MP, we hope Congress will be happy that we are fielding Dutt," he said. Singh hoped that senior Congress leaders, including Law minister Hansraj Bhardwaj and Ahmed Patel, would "bless" Dutt.

He claimed Dutt was willing to contest the elections.

The party would field Tiwari from Gorakhpur where he would be pitted against BJP's Aditya Nath who is heir apparent of the powerful Gorakhnath Peeth in the East UP city.

Sanjay Dutt for Parliament by RA on 17 Jan 2009

If Sanjay Dutt wants to serve the people as he claims like typical politician, he should first serve out his punishment in jail for crimes he is convicted of against the people or wait until after the Supreme Court renders its decision on reversing the conviction, as a check on his ability to meddle in the Judicial Process with support from his SP masters. It is really tragic that in a nation called a democracy, there is just no regard for checks and balances and every rule and ethic of a constitutional democracy is blatantly manipulated /disregarded with impunity by feudal minded political party lords like Amar Singh for power grab - all under the falsehood of service to the people. It is like all of India is a large 'akhada' for 'kushti' by politicians for the trophy of Kursi for themselves. The role of the people is to serve as the cheering squad for one side or the other. Let us stop fooling ourselves with sham elections that there is anything democratic about the Indian system

Sanjay Dutt inelligible to contest election by PP TALWAR on 12 Jan 2009

It is strange why samajwadi party is so keen to field sanjay Dutt as a SP candidate from Lucknow for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, knowing that Sanjay Dutt having been sentenced for six years under the Arms Act, now on bail, is inelligible to contest elections, as per the law of the land. No comparison with Navjot Singh Sidhu of BJP whose offence was not of serious nature can be made.

CRIME RECORD IS PRIME ELIGIBITY? by dvs on 09 Jan 2009

Samajwadi Party is run by itself opportunists, and no candidate they could find which has some standing.

He is a bad choice for service of people by mystiq on 09 Jan 2009

Mr. Dutt will be just another feather in SP's Criminal cap. India cannot prosper as long as criminals and actors (that too with criminal history) stop coming into politics and becoming ministers. Political parties ought to be blamed for making this as a religion to win votes. It is educated youth that can take our country forward; not people with criminal backgrounds.

SP fields Sanjay Dutt from Lucknow LS seat by sunaina on 08 Jan 2009

The fact that he was convicted under the Arms Act, would make his candidature much more devastating than the fact of his being an actor.

Sanjay Dutt by Ramesh on 08 Jan 2009

All 'reformed' criminals and all those who are let off by the judicial system soon take refuge in the country's legislative organs through the corrupt process of elections. Are there no wise people left in this country?

Actor Politics by M.S. Dhaliwal on 08 Jan 2009

What a shame!.The qualification for politics is winning by what ever means and the screw the country resources. Just because he is an actor or brother of some body, he can make a perfect politician ?????. No wonder the country is in such a state. Take Govinda for example. What did he know about politics and what has he done for his constituancy or India ??? waste of space. Unless these people are qualified and make a written commitment to work full time (if elected) for their constituancies, they should not be allowed. Public should be made aware of the fact that these are people they will only see during elction time and the they will be back in Bolliwood until next election and the politicians supporting them will benifit from their vote and use them as puppets when ever required to vote for them (most of the time against government or any positive action) for next five years. Actor, Singer or Sports person should stick to their profession unless they are giving up that profession.

sanjaya dutt and election by k.madhukar on 08 Jan 2009

The man who was trying to take law into his own hands with the help of underworld wants to become law maker himself supported by a political party full of such people. This can happen only in India

Crime and politics by Hemant on 08 Jan 2009

Recently Amar Singh all criminals from his party have gone and Joined BSP so SP has started recruiting new criminals. This time criteria is you have to be convicted by TADA for crime against your own country. Sanjay dutt qualifies. Why this guy is not in jail.

Qualification to be a SP candidate by Jatin on 08 Jan 2009

SP can nicely identify potential anti-nationals and criminals. You must have a crime record to become a SP candidate. India does not need Pakistan or other terrorists when we have such political parties amongst us.

Shame for our country! by Manu on 08 Jan 2009

What a shame when Sanju comes to Politics!! This SP has offered Abu Selim also ticket before and this is nothing suprising!! Sunitl Dutt was a clean party man and was accepted among all parties. But Sanju being a convicted in Mumbai Blast and still not acquited and going thru his jail term!! shame on our political system. WE need to have a system where by if someone wants to be elected they have to prove their presence in politics, and service offered to public, positions held in public service, criminal record etc so that everyone knows that the person contesting elections knows what is what..not bloody actors who doesnt know anything about world except the so called Bollywood to come and do some gimmiks in politics like Govinda and all. its Shamefull.. Militants from Pak are better than these set of jerks in Politics! A youth movement against this trend should come and I believe it would happen soon!! Jai HInd!!

Give a Ticket to Kasab by Appu on 08 Jan 2009

As a secular flag holder, Mulana Mulayam's SP should consider giving ticket to Kasab-the-terrorist. Act fast or the communists and Lallu will.

SP fields Sanjay Dutt from Lucknow LS seat by pandurang on 08 Jan 2009

even after the mumbai terror attacks, our politicians have not learnt anything. how can a candidate who is convicted on serious offence like the Mumbai bomb blast be allowed to contest elections ?in that case, do we have to right to say that "Pakistan is harbouring terrorist" ?for that matter, kasav can tomorrow contest for elections in india ?Or is it a ploy by Sanjay Dutt to escape punishment in the Mumbai Bomb Blast case ?it would be shame if the EC and the SC would allow such candidates to contest elections

God Save This Country by Satish Haldankar on 08 Jan 2009

What next, Amar Singh? Why not field all convicted criminals and rename your party Goondawadi Party?

WHY NOT AFZAL GURU TOO?

Sanjay Dutt as SP candidate for Lok Sabha by Krishna on 08 Jan 2009

Sanjay Dutt is an anti-national, he should be put behind the door forever. No wonder why SP is choosing him, the party it self is made up worst kind of anti-socials and anti-nationals. God save India!!

Sanjay Dutt as SP candidate for Lok Sabha by R.J Khurana on 08 Jan 2009

When political parties run out of ideas for winning elections they get film actors to contest elections. They win because of their popularity but soon make monkeys of themselves. Making country's laws is a serious business. Actors are good as actors and not as law makers. But purblind politicians cannot see beyond winning an election. Let the country go to hell. Who cares for the country any way?
