SP nudges in at Bukhari meet to forge 'Muslim platform'

New Delhi, October 14 With terrorism likely to set the tone for the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Shahi Imam of Delhi Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari, with the visible support of the Samajwadi Party, began efforts to forge a platform of Muslim clerics and leaders.

Although leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and several Islamic clerics were present at a conference organised by Bukhari on Jama Masjid premises, it was clearly a Samajwadi Party show with party heavyweight Abu Azim Azmi and its Rajya Sabha MP Shafiqur Rahman Barg in attendance.

Setting the tone, the Shahi Imam slammed BSP chief Mayawati for organising a Muslim seminar in Lucknow on Monday, a day ahead of his conference, and alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had only offered promises and not done much for the community. He was also scathing on the Congress.

The presence of SP leaders at the conference is significant as the party is making all-out efforts not to lose its sizeable Muslim votebank, especially since it reversed its opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal. The attempt seems to be to retain its pro-Muslim image even while extending support to the Congress-led Government at the Centre.

The conference resolved to demand a judicial inquiry into the Jamia Nagar encounter, a demand that has already been made by SP general secretary Amar Singh, setting up of a judicial commission to look into cases registered against Muslim youths in connection with the terror attacks and enactment of a law to protect Muslims on the lines of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Although the conference stopped short of floating a proposal for the formation of a national party for Muslims, it decided to set up a committee — Quami Muslim Majlis-e-Amal — to take up their demands with the Centre.

Bukhari accused the Government of harassing Muslims in the name of fighting terror.

Elections and Muslims by maccikhan on 16 Oct 2008

The moment elections are called all these political parties and the religious leaders wake up and start thinking of preparing a stupid aggenda of appeasing Muslims in India. Why do they have to do this? We are and will always be a part and parcel of our nation INDIA no matter what come may. Why do we the muslims have to get any rocognition from these leaders for our rights and to show that we are Indian. Let us simply support and stand with the party that would surely take our community in right direction, even if it is BJP for that matter as long as they promise us respect, and treat us as Indians and not aliens. First let us learn to respect all the communities as Indians and not recognise them with religion, cast or creed. WE had enough of this for more five decades now, do we still need to continue our thinking and approach in the same directioin. These politicians and the religious leaders will take us no where but towards more and more alination from our Indian soceity

Dare don't speak lies by Saccha Gujarati on 16 Oct 2008

Mr. Aman, if you are saying that hindus don't have reservation then you are a fool, we are not talking about individual, we are talking about community. go and see all the govt. institutions, you will find all the ghati Hindus sitting and chewing pan because of reservation provided by Govt. What you are saying about parties appease muslims, see your hindutva party. BJP, RSS, VHP and MNS, they keep on killing innocents openly with the support of state sponsored terrorism. If Muslims are trying to strengthen them, you need to hang them, the days are gone now, no more muslim killings, if you are spreading fire, you will get the same back from us. Ask you father, modi how he killed thousand of muslims, even bajrang dal people are killed during making bombs, then why there was no issue for such incidents, Many places these so called bajrang dal has done bomb blasts, then why you don't open you mouth that time, beware before you comment. On terrorism by satish on 15 Oct 2008

I can't stand to see people 'forming parties' and holding rallies. ACTION is the need of the hour. Per Lt. Gen. A.K. Sinha - we need to:a. Use a three-prong strategy of unified command, We let the Kashmiri press get away with Yellow Journalism - as in Jamia Nagar. We must communicate continuously and openly with the people. b. economic development - There must be transparent, and equitable economic opportunities to everyone (note - reservation is not the answer - Micro-capital IS!!!)c. psychological warfare - the entire population has to be motivated to fight terrorism - as Indians, not as Hindu/muslim/sikh/christian. People must provide timely information. If we hear of a priest/politician/administrator/official preaching hatred - he/she should be reported and opposed - we need to provide information to police. Finally - the police needs to be empowered - they're currently pawns of politicians - we need more police stations, and more policemen not looking after bandobast

Poltical Gain by Shakeel Shaikh on 15 Oct 2008

The reason why political parties play on muslim platform few common reasons a)Muslims are easily taken for the ride politicians giving them false promises b)Majority of muslims are backward as they are not educated they do not understand what is right or wrong for them.As in the past any party which has come in the centre has not done anything for anyone except for their own ploitical gain.I think Indians should leave behind religion agenda both Hindus and Muslims should work together towards one common goal that is strengthen unity of our country but seeing the current situation this is just a remote dream.

respect and common sense needed! by indian on 15 Oct 2008

I personally feel that the Muslim community is deliberately being kept backward. Hindu society (not Hinduism) too had many social evils. Sati, dowry, untouchablity, caste system, polygamy, child marriage etc.. But can you see the progress that has been achieved. Leaders can definetly initiate changes among hindus, and so even after 100 years hindus will definitely adapt to the reality that is around them. But in case of Muslims, even a minor comment will immediately attract a fatwa and a possible beheading. Such attitude of muslim leaders will push the community even more backward. Can anyone even object to burka system or poligamy!!!. The society isn't the same as it used to be 1000 years back. We live in a democratic country which has a judicial system, parliamentary democracy, a military, constitution and other supporting institutions. This will NEVER change. So its important that people keep religion at home and respect the world the way it i

A muslim party is bound to fail by rocker on 15 Oct 2008

India has quite a large number of 'minority' communities. Including muslims who form the largest minorty (not the second largest majority!!). People from other faiths like sikhs, jains, has achieved success and prospered in India. If Muslims try to isolate themselves by creating a parallel 'islamic' party... the situation could get even more dangerous. In my humble opinion, Muslims must ditch 'community' attitude and work for the welfare of people around them and the welfare of the society. Hindus byfar are not 'communally' united to form a parallel political party exclusively. But it may change unfortunately.....

secularism must come from people's heart by am2 on 15 Oct 2008

First ulema and clerics 'decide' who muslims must vote for. Then the whole community follows that decision blindly. Isnt this equal to sabotaging our nations democracy. If the congress has provided only lip services to muslims, then probably muslims pretty much deserve it!!. No party can obviously claim to be anti-hindu either!!. Things will drastically change if muslim community doesnt see itself as a different fenced entity in the country. Political parties will then be forced to speak about progress and development rather than resorting to 'religious' appeasement of people.

Where is Election Commission Sleeping by Gopal on 15 Oct 2008

Where is the Election Commission sleeping now? Why doesn't it ban parties like SP and BSP for communal politics. BSP came out with a full page Advertisement yesterday for appeasing muslims.SP is openly indulging in communal politics by issuing irresponsible statements together with the likes of Bukhari.

Politics and religion by RB on 15 Oct 2008

all political-econmic or developmental activity based on caste, creed or religion should be scutlled. if we want our country to develop and people to prosper then the we should make the economic index or poverty/ income levels as the focal point to decide who needs to be uplifted and who needs reservations in education, employment etc. Religion is a personal matter, a way of moderating/ leading your personal life. The division of the country on lines of religion or caste or community must end. we are all indians first and must be treated as such. All political activity based on religion must be banned for all communities. the mention of religion in all types of forms for education/ employement should be removed in our so called secular nation. we need to end this religious in fighting to survive and prosper.

SP and Imam Bukhari by Varinder on 15 Oct 2008

Good Idea of SP and Imam Bukhari to forge a platform for Muslims to fight elections. Hindu clerics and BJP should take a clue from SP and Imams, and forge an alliance to unite Hindu vote bank. If Muslims can forge a unified platform, why can't hindus. As far Bukhari's allegation that govt. is harrassing muslims in the name of fighting terror, perhaps he needs to do scanning along with Amar Singh and Abu Azim Azami that never a Mohan lal, Girdhari lal, Natha Ram, or Kishan Chand has been caught in terrorists activity in India. Who have been caught is known to the nation.

SP by Shakeel Shaikh on 15 Oct 2008

Dear Varinder BJP who are known to play Hindutva to gain votes are only fooling hindus ,as known from Independence till now never a muslim name has come to power, so you know whether its BJP or Congress those inducted in cabinet shows who are ruling whom as i have mentioned in my mail above if you read ,you will have your answer,Unity and safeguard of individual in our country is top priority and it overrides all alliance

Bhukhari... Muslim Platform by Madhavan Kutty on 15 Oct 2008

Parties like Samajvadi and BSP are injecting religion and castism in people for vote bank purpose. Religious leaders irrespective of religion should advise people to be an Indian first and second to religion and cast.

Dangerous Votebank Politics by pravin sagar on 15 Oct 2008

It is high time that we rewrite the rule of our democracy. It seems there isn't enough law to check these types of anti-national goons working in our country who are trying to divide the country making public platforms on religions basis with their hidden agenda for votebank politics. Nevertheless, when this so-called 'minority community' in question will understand that this congress and SP/BSP/Lallos and Paswans are fooling them with lot of promises and just enjoy their votes? The sooner they realize the better for their own community only, eventually to our country.

SP and Muslims by True Indian on 15 Oct 2008

How can Indian Muslims support UPA Govt and especially SP who are dealing with US and George Bush who killed million innocent Muslims in Iraq and Afghanisthan ? Dr. Manmohan Singh said Indians (Muslims) love Bush .Muslim community should reject these parties and leaders like Amar Singh who are playing with innocent and poor mulsims of India and should reject in elections .

SP's dangerous move by rajiv rangan on 15 Oct 2008

If at all, in the worst case, India our nation is to divide again, on cast and/or religion basis, the full credit should go to Mulla Mulayam Yadav, Amar Singh, Lallo Yadav, Ramvilas Paswan and finally the so-called UPA/Congress govt. Hope this tragedy would not happen. If the people of India want to avert such a dangerous situation, people should immediately dump the above 'secularists/' and probably courts should intervene in this and arrest these anti-national people for anti-national activities.

SP nudges in at Bukhari meet by Syamasundara prasad Turaga on 15 Oct 2008

Dear Editor, the matters are beyond control with the helping hand of Samjwadi party supporting a separete national level party to represent muslims. This is going to be pre independance time of forming muslim league resulting in the division of India. Our broithers who champion muslim cause certainly devide India again. As such it is in the interest of Hindus and country as whole, it is the demand of the day not to allow such things to happen. Leaders like Mulayam Singh (Mulla M Singh) are direct traitors of our country for petty political gains in a short sited way they are harbouring big trouble for the Hindus. My request is to all hindu community people is they should join hands and form formidable obsticle to the workds of such leaders.

SP an Anti National Party by Tarashankar Rudra on 15 Oct 2008

SHAME on YOU SP and so called SECULARISTS. At a time when India needs to stand by Nationalist ideology, you are playing dirty Communal Politics. It is the need of the hour that all Imams and Madarsas speaking against India, Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains be tried for treason and even hanged. The people who are tirelessly working 24/7 to maintain peace along our borders and within States so that our men, women and children can sleep in peace are constantly left to die in agony. Why does not the Government send the so called secularists, Imams and their anti National followers as sand bags to the front line? They are serpents and the taxpayers are paying for the security of people who are butchering them indiscriminately.

Dont believe in SP by Parvinder Singh on 15 Oct 2008

Muslims are themselves responsible for their diminishing value in politics .. every time they become a tool for a party for votes. Cant they stand themseleves on their own feet? Cant they see other minorities like Sikhs, Christians, Buddhsits, etc standing on their own. Now, they are taking support of Sp, which is the most Corrupt

Don't spit poison by Imteyaz on 15 Oct 2008

Indian express has a team of saffron letter writers who always spit poison and when others write letters it hardly get the space, this is what I experienced, take an example of two saffron mind letter who know very well the situation, they know that all the blasts are politically motivated and handiworks of RSS Privar keeping in view the next election as they do not have any agenda. They know very well that Muslims have got nothing in divided India. They know very well that Muslims are poorest lot in India. In fact this is first time in the history that they are experiencing a multi religious society. They don't know justice.

Raise your voice with the voice of India by Avijit on 15 Oct 2008

Imteyaj, raise voice with the voice of India and dont brand those terorrists killed in Jamia Nagar as innocent. How do your community know that they are innocents ? Raise your voice for those killed in bomb blast and sing with the tune of entire nation. Otherwise you all will also be alienated from the Indian nation hood and will be branded as anti nationalist.

FIRSTLY , THE CONCLUDING PART OF MY COMMENTS HAS NOT BEEN PRODUCED I APPRECIATE FOR WHAT YOU HAVE WRITTEN . YES , IT IS THE MORAL DUTY OF AN ELDER BROTHER TO HELP HIS AILING YOUNGER BROTHER TO BALANCE THE HEALTHY ATMOSPHERE AT HOME . CONTITUTION GUARANTEES MANY THINGS , BUT THE FACT OF LIFE IS THERE HAS BEEN A DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO MARGINALISE MUSLIMS EDUCATIONALLY AND ECONOMICALLY . THIS STEP-BROTHERLY TREATMENT HAS CREATED A WIDE GAP WHICH WILL AFFECT THE OVERALL HEALTH OF OUR SOCIETY . EVEN EDUCATED MUSLIMS ARE DEPRIVED GOVT JOBS / BANK LOANS AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IN A HIGHLY BIASED MANNER . WHY? YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE HURT FEELING OF MUSLIMS . CONSTITUTION IS CONFINED TO THE BOOK WE REQUIRE ONLY 4 - 5 % FOR A BRIEF PERIOD WHICH MAY BE WITHDRAWN LATER . LEND YOUR ( UNBIASED ) LITTLE FINGER AND UPLIFT US INTO THE MAINSTREAM ,, SURELY YOU WILL FIND MUSLIMS WILL NEVER DISAPPOINT THEIR BIG BROTHER. WANNA TRY ? A HEALTHY SOCIETY WILL PREVAIL…. THINK ,, INTROSPECT FACTS OBJECTIVELY ,, AND ACT IN THE INTEREST OF HAMARA INDIA .

SP by jayachandran on 15 Oct 2008

Sir, It is well known Bukhari has made statements which are against our Nation. we know the problem with Sp, having lost a lot of minority votes to Mayavaty.Unfortunately the SP leaders are seeing the terrorists as a harassed lot,so making ststements for them will fetch the "ignorant" Muslim vote !.It seems that SP leaders will go to any extent ,be it even Dawood Ibrahim,to fetch a few votes by pleasing the Muslim Clerics. No wonder ,if SP leaders go like this, communalism will grow at a rapid pace.

Misguding the societies will be mosst harmful please be awaer of such self center leaders

Sp leaders met Shahi Imam by Naveed on 15 Oct 2008

What's wrong in politicians meeting the religious leasders? Don't the BJP leaders meet the hindu religious leadres and saints? What is VHP and Bajrang Dal? Infact BJP is VHP and VHP is BJP. So, nothing wrong if SP leaders meet the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid to seek support of muslims.

sp leaders by dr.h.d.waikar on 15 Oct 2008

Just wait SP leaders like moron Amarsingh,Mulayam will be responsible for further division of India.Muslims will ask for a seperate homeland with the support of cowards like SP Leaders. Its high time these people should be defeated in elections

SP leaders met Shahi Imam by Vijay Kumar on 15 Oct 2008

There is nothing wrong in politicians meeting religious leaders. What is wrong is dividing the people on religious grounds. The politicians are smart fools and lead the public for their own exclusive benefit. The public is a bigger fool as they allow such leaders leaders to fool them.

SP leaders met Imama by Meghna on 15 Oct 2008

Nothing wrong in meeting the imam but to decide and urge the community for support for a judicial probe for encouter is wrong. When the suspects have committed themselves .. what is so hard for SP leaders to accept!!!

No problem by Devendra Patel on 15 Oct 2008
