New Delhi, January 7: The Samajwadi Party on Monday announced launch of an agitation against the Uttar Pradesh government's Ganga Expressway project which it dubbed as "a tool to mint money" for Chief Minister Mayawati.

"The project is all about commission," Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said after a meeting of the United National Progressive Alliance, whose leaders also echoed his views.

Singh said 19 districts of UP, including towns and cities, will be "destroyed" while farmers will lose land because of the project which has an estimated cost of Rs 40,000 lakh.

"What is the necessity for such a project," he said, adding SP will organise sit-ins and rallies in all affected districts from January 15 in protest against the project.

TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu said the expressway connecting Noida with Ballia will take away precious multi-crop land, affecting thousands of farmers of the state.

SP leader Amar Singh said those contractors who attend Mayawati's birthday bash on January 15 will give an indication about the level of corruption.

The proposed project is for developing an eight-lane access controlled expressway, with a total length of 1,047 kilometres, from Greater Noida to Ballia on public private partnership model along the Left bank of Ganga.
