Mumbai, December 7 The results of this year’s supplementary examinations for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) have shown considerable improvement as compared to last year. Conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education in October 2007, the results declared this morning show a pass percentage of 23.36 and 22.03 in SSC and HSC exams, respectively, in the eight divisions— Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati, Nashik and Latur.

Repeaters from 2659 schools and 679 junior colleges in Mumbai appeared for the exams.

Held in 55 centres across the state, 2,72,529 students appeared for the SSC exam out of which 63,670 students passed. The highest pass percentage was recorded in Amravati division (26.47) followed by Pune division (26.29) and Mumbai division (24.16). Last year the pass percentage in Mumbai was 17.87.

Mumbai division once again topped the HSC exam recording a pass percentage of 29.76 compared to 24.43 pass per cent last year.

Out of 1,60,184 students who appeared for the HSC exams at 28 centres in the different divisions in the state, 35,291 students passed.

Interestingly, girls performed better than the boys in terms of securing distinction in SSC exam. Eighteen girls secured distinction compared to 11 boys across the state.

Basanti Roy, secretary, Mumbai divisional board of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education said, “Mumbai recorded the highest number of repeaters appeared for the exams among all the eight divisions in SSC as well as HSC exams. The quality of results in the Mumbai division is quite good.”

This year, both SSC and HSC exams saw a sharp decline in the number of cases of malpractices. Only 18 cases of malpractices in SSC and 16 in HSC were reported.

Mathematics saw a dismal 4.72 pass percentage and science 18.61 per cent whereas Gujarati (first language) recorded the highest with 52.49 per cent followed by Hindi (first language) with 47.84 per cent.

With the highest number of candidates appearing for the HSC exam (14,410 students), the commerce stream recorded a pass percentage of 31.28 followed by Arts (8082 students) with 30.31 per cent and Science (6133 students) with 25.42 per cent.

The last date for application of revaluation of papers is December 17.
